16 March So yesterday I'm going to the van to go to work and there are people waiting and one comes but passes us by and this one guy turns his head to watch it go by and sees me and does a double-take. He starts sidling over to me. "O Lord," I thought, as I peered determinately up the street past him, "Why am I such a freak magnet? Why can these men not leave me alone?" He comes closer, he leans towards me... "This is Weehawken," I think, "I mean, I understand the freaks being in New York, but not in suburbia! O why am I such a fascinating person! It's such a burden!" He whispers in my ear, tenderly, "Your fly is open." Whoops!
I have a new hobby. Because I have not got nearly enough old ones. When I was in Boston, Robert and I went to the neatest store in all the land, where I picked up this little tin of paperclips, but not just any paperclips, Italian paperclips! Italian paperclips aren't like American ones, they are little round spirals instead of our elongated ones, and I'm just wild about them! I've always been unnaturally attached to my regular paperclips--everyone knows that I need to get them back after the invoices are stapled, but those aren't really special, they are just mine. Only child, remember? Anyway, the new hobby is Paperclips From Foreign Lands! And it's one of those perfect collections, because if people go on holiday or something, they are cheap and easy for them to bring back, and they are inexpensive to mail and things. And they are useful! I'm using the Italian ones at work, though I'm spending a great deal of time slapping people's hands away from them. So, do you live in a foreign land? Are you visiting one soon? Would you send me a box or a tin of paperclips? I'll send you some American paperclips in exchange...unless you were just on holiday. Because, if you live in Iowa or something, you won't be that thrilled. Of course, perhaps if you live in Finland you won't be that thrilled, either! And Dawn, just because I have Italian paperclips already doesn't mean I don't want more, because these are in a tin made in the States, so ones in an Italian box or tin would be cool!
Happy birthday, Bob-bon!
