28 June So yesterday I was checking out my own page, clicking around and pretending that I didn't know what a journal was, that I had seen my Gladiator review here, click me as helpful, people!) and decided to visit my page, and just randomly started reading entries, and do you know what? I liked it! I mean, maybe I was lucky in the entries that I picked (I didn't hit any of those riveting "I'm late for work and have no time to write" entries), but I really found what I read to be interesting. I mean, if you let enough time go by, you forget your turns of phrase and your reported conversations, and you can just enjoy them like a fresh reader would. I would also click on other links, and sometimes I was surprised. Like in this entry, where I mentioned this site, that I remembered as having ended. But now it's back! Rah! He stopped for two years, then just picked up again ( here) and I for one am thrilled.
I have just been reading the most corking book, that I must recommend to all and sundry. It's called Sweet Liberty: Travels in Irish America by Joseph O'Connor (and apparently Sinead's brother, though he doesn't mention it in the book), an Irishman who came here to check out all of the little towns named Dublin all over America. It is completely hilarious--very Bill Bryson-ish, but with an Irish accent. It has been sitting in my "to read" pile for four years, and I have no idea what I have been doing with my time, because it's just the most hilarious book I've read in ages. The problem with Amazon is, when you are trying to locate an author with a name as common as Joseph O'Connor, they stick every Joseph O'Connor known to man on the same page and trying to figure out if the one you are interested in wrote all of those books or not is terribly tricky. He's probably not the one who wrote all of those books on Neuro-Linguistic Programming, that's my guess. Of course, everything that I think he did write is out of stock, so I popped over to Amazon.co.uk, the Barren Land of No Wishlists. I stuffed everything into my shopping basket "to save for later". It's such a thrill to find a new author, one whose every word you want to read. It would be nicer if the books were easier to get, but I'm not complaining.
I've realized why Survivor doesn't do it for me, besides the fact that I hate reality shows. It's because it's just so pussy! Now, if they killed and ate the losers every week, rather than just sending them home to civilization, that would be something worth watching!
And, in our Journal of the Week, Journalese, all kinds of exciting things are happening. I love this entry, about rugby and football. Russell Crowe calls football "the girl's game", Jackie calls it "the ultimate fluffy pink cardie boy game". I guess that's the general New Zealander attitude, huh?
What book are you reading and loving with all of your heart? And we're still talking about the nature of fame, beating the heat, scars, how we've changed since high school, pettiness, the vans (I finally answered that one!), and diets.
