9 January So yesterday I went into work for a few hours and finished everything up. Man, I was so happy about having a weekend right away, but I go into work on a Saturday of my own accord! For three and a half hours! Sometimes I surprise myself. But you know what? All the checks went out, we'll be off credit hold with a few of the angrier vendors, and all the reps are getting their dough at last, that's all I care about.
Afterwards I went up to Lincoln Square to see The Green Mile again, getting there just after the previews started...only to discover that I had forgotten what Saturday nights in New York are like. Every single showing of every single film from 7.30p to 10.30p was sold out. All that was left were a couple of 11.30p and 12.15a screenings, plus the 10.30p of Galaxy Quest, so I thought that I'd get a ticket for that and go have dinner for three hours. What a wonderful movie! The thing that struck me was that it was a very joyful, joyous film, and that I had spent the last three weeks pretty much weeping through every sad, depressing film that I saw, and it was such a treat to spend two hours laughing! And it wasn't a dumb comedy, either, it was tightly plotted and cleverly scripted, the effects were great, and the performances were spot-on. Tim Allen was flat-out excellent, Sigourney Weaver shows that a smart actress can do great things with the blonde bimbo role, Alan Rickman's innate Alan Rickmanness (Rickmosity?) was an absolute treat, the aliens, particularly Enrico Colantoni as the head alien guy, were great, Daryl Mitchell was a stitch, but the standout performer by far was Tony Shalhoub. Tony who? You know, the guy from Wings, the guy from Big Night, the guy who is always solid and good and smart, but he literally walked away with Galaxy Quest in the role of Fred. He underplayed everything in such a cheerful way (in sharp contrast to Rickman's irritated underplaying) that the entire audience fell in love with him in a way that was marvelous to witness. I really only heard less than half of his lines, because he would only start to speak and the audience would just start howling. It was a really lovable movie. Go see it!
