(The Mighty Kymm--you'll not see nothing like!)

27 February

It's late, I have a headache, and I need to go into work. But I haven't written my entry yet. Obviously.

Am I procrastinating because it's in my nature or because I don't feel like going into work? Or because I'm stuck on Level 42 again? Or just because it's Sunday and I don't feel like moving?

Just got through Level 42. No more excuses.

Spent the day in the darkroom yesterday, blowing up some shots for The Raccoon (not bad for her first time with a roll of BW film) and some pictures of a woman at work for our Annual Report (she hates having her picture taken, so didn't even have a snapshot to contribute), some show shots and a couple of pictures from when I saw Patrick and The Girls (sounds like a pop band) last weekend.

There's one of Tracing that I would love to post, but I really need to show it to her first...As I wrote to her "It's not, shall we say, particularly flattering, but it's a great personality shot, and you're not that vain so maybe you'll let me post it!"

If it was a picture of me it would never see the light of day, but I never claimed not to be a hypocrite, so there you go!

Afterwards I went on the Great Search For a Saturday Night Movie in New York.

I mean, it's not like I haven't been living here for seventeen-and-a-half years, and I should certainly know better, but some things surprise me anew everytime.

Like the fact that few movies worth seeing start at 8p--if you miss the 7.15p show, you have to wait until 9.30p, difficult if you get out of the darkroom at 7p and you haven't eaten all damn day. So I decided to eat and see what I could find, which was an 8.20p screening of The Wonder Boys at Kips Bay, leaving time to eat and to get there! What could be better?

Well, I forgot about Rule 2, which is that if you don't get there an hour before show time, you're dead out of luck, and at 8.10p the 8.20p screening was long gone. The only show with tickets available before 10p was the 8.30p screening of The Boiler Room, a big hint about how that film's doing, so I sat down and went through the paper with a fine-toothed comb.

I was determined to see a film that night or die trying.

Aha! Topsy-Turvy was playing at the Paris at 9.20p, a big art house with only one cinema and alot of seats, so I thought that I had a good shot. And I was right! And I ended up being thrilled that I couldn't get into anything else I was interested in, because it was a really swell movie.

Some have complained about how it takes so long to get to The Mikado or that things are brought up but never resolved, or that it's too long, but I don't agree. It reminded me of phyllo dough, you know, layer after layer after very thin layer adding up to a whole that would be lessened without each layer.

The marvelous Jim Broadbent was, well, marvelous as usual as Gilbert (if you haven't seen Little Voice, he's marvelous in that as well), as was Allan Corduner as Sullivan, as were the entire cast. I particularly liked Tim Spall, who was dreadfully underrated in Secrets and Lies, Martin Savage as the leading actor (according to the IMDB, this was his first film!) and Shirley Henderson as the leading lady, who should play twins with Jennifer Jason Leigh someday, since they not only look alike but have the exact same physicality, voice and manner. Separated at birth.

I must say that the directing scene was one of the funniest things that I have ever seen, especially after having just come down from directing a show! Any other directors who read this (like Melissa, Pamie, and Lee for three), you must see it, you'll die. I don't know what your styles are, but mine is so similar to Gilbert's that that might as well have been me up there!

Though I have rather less facial hair. And rarely refer to my actors as "Mister" or "Miss" anything. "Babe", "Sweetie" and "You Big Dork" being closer to my reality.

Finished! No thanks to Tracing. I'm off.
