29 December So, yesterday was the Day of Disneyland. Last year I went with Mom, and I had a good time, but as far as I am concerned, there is nothing that I enjoy more than going by myself. I can go as fast or as slow as I like, I can spend as long or as short of a time, I can go on any rides I like and skip the stupid ones. The only important thing is what makes me happiest at that very little moment. God, I am such an only child.
I got up at the crack and went into the Valley to drop off a skirt that needed to be made smaller (I'd like to say that's because I am simply wasting away, but it was too big when I got it) then it was off to Neverland! I mean Disneyland. I knew that I probably wouldn't get there until 11a, so I stopped at McDonald's for breakfast. I always have breakfast at Carnation--or rather, I always try to have breakfast at Carnation, most of the time they have just stopped serving when I get there. I decided that, this time, McDonald's really was the better part of valour. When I was actually there, I walked by Carnation at 11a and the breakfast menu was still up. Clearly, I cannot win.
They are building a huge new Disney thing in the old parking lot, so when you go in now, you park in a big tall structure, like going to DisneyMall rather than Land. It's kid of weird and disappointing, because that first glimpse of the park really doesn't happen until the tram actually pulls up at the gate, but I shook that off and went in, ready to party. Or at least to stand in line for hours on end. I brought seven books with me and read them all, that's the kind of day it was, but I didn't mind, as it was a really stunning day, terribly warm and lovely. It was actually a treat to be allowed the privilege to stand in line outside on such a day.
It was an absolute zoo, though, more than I had ever seen before. There were alot of signs saying that it would be 90 minutes or 2 hours to wait, though sometimes the times were wildly off. Small World posted a wait time of 75 minutes that really ended up being 20, but I really was terribly impressed when Star Tours' wait time of 65 minutes ended up being exactly correct to the second. They have this new thing called a Fastpass now, so that if you don't feel like waiting in the long queue you can get one and come back several hour later and get cut to the front of the line. You cannot, however, get a fistful of them and never have to stand in a line at all, you have to choose the one that saves you the most time, the one that would be the most horrible wait of all, it's like a game show. And then, when it expires, you can get another one for another ride. For the second most horrible wait. I only did one, for Space Mountain, whose posted wait time was 120 minutes. It was great, I went away and did other stuff, then came back two hours later or so and was through the line in five minutes! And then I got to do it again, because a girl had an extra one and I was the only person that she could find who was there alone. It was very cool. The funniest thing that I heard about the crowd, though, was from the barker outside Honey I Shrunk the Audience, who said: "Ladies and gentlemen, yesterday was only the fourth day in the history of Disneyland when they had to close the doors--there were so many people here that they just couldn't fit another one in. With that in mind, what on earth are you people doing here today?" Good point, but I'll bet it'l be worse this weekend, so there you go. That's why I was there.
At the end of the evening, I looked into my wallet and was simply horrified at the utter lack of cash. I had had $100, where had it all gone in only eleven and a half hours? Well, I got Bonnie and Molly their Christmas presents, the former a Tigger sweatshirt that I can only hope is too big for her and will leave some growing room, and the latter a Winnie the Pooh purse filled with markers that I think will just make her fall over an a swoon of joy. I got myself a T-shirt, because Mom had gotten me one last year and I thought that if I got one this year, it would make it a tradition. It has Mickey on it and says 2001, and since it will be 2001 in just a day or two (no really, it will!), I thought that it was somewhat timely. I had a meal or two, got some fudge, played some pinball, shot at the shooting gallery (thirteen hits out of fifteen shots, no less!), got a couple of things out of machines that I am unable to identify at this time (not until I send them to the unidentified person who will be receiving said things from machines) ad bought a bar of soap that smelled really good. Yep, that's about $100 right there.
And we are still talking about what we got for Christmas.
