24 December So, after getting my hair dyed purple on Friday, Mom and I went to Century City. For my first outing with the hair, it went pretty well. It's weird, when you have purple hair, basically you get two reactions--people either look at you and smile or look at you and frown, either way, they are going to look at you. Little kids look and their eyes get real big. The cooler shop assistants exclaim over it, the snootier shop assistants look down their noses. I have spent my entire life not doing things to my hair in order to keep myself commercial, but I have finally decided that I don't really care! That there are such things as wigs and that if I try to keep myself commercial I'll never do anything fun. When Jessie comes to NY with her pink hair, we will look as though the circus has come to town!
I didn't realize that I was going to be out so late, so I didn't bring my jacket and was very cold. We went to The Gap because I wanted one of the stripy sweaters to match my scarf and hat. My scarf is blue and my hat is orange, so my sweater is purple, of course! I put it on right away (against my will, 'cause it's a present, but it was real cold) which meant that I looked like I was trying to match my hair. The guy at the counter at Brentanos asked me if I changed my hair colour every time I change my sweater. I said no, that I dyed all of my shirts instead.
Yesterday morning we got up first thing and bought all of our Christmas groceries and then the tree, that we found and bought and lashed to the top of the car in record time, about ten minutes, and with not a single fight! It's a Christmas miracle! We found the most beautiful not-too-tall tree. It has a hole in one side, but I have decided that what I look for in a tree isn't something that's even or perfect or fresh or nice, but a tree that speaks to me. And that's what I got this time, the tree that wanted to come home with me.
After that, we went to see Traffic at the Academy. This is a truly great movie, absolutely extraordinary. It was so funny, though, after it was over all you could here were all of these conversations going, "Now, what happened? Who was the bad guy? What on earth was that movie about?" I understood it, every bit of it, though you really had to pay attention, and I loved it with all of my heart. Benicio Del Toro was basically perfect, and he usually is the kind of actor to make things more complicated, piling things on top of things, but this was so stripped down, so simple, he really rocked my world. But everyone was great, it was a tremendously strong cast all around. Don Cheadle and Luis Guzman and Miguel Ferrer, Michael Douglas and Erika Christensen, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Dennis Quaid, they were all wonderful, everyone was working at their strongest.
Afterwards they were showing All the Pretty Horses, which I wasn't wild to see, so we went home and instead I went to Universal Citywalk and saw Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Saturday night at Citywalk is an absolute zoo, filled with all of these dreadful teenagers (gosh, I sound old), seven of which settled right behind me and started yelling and carrying on during the trailers. One girl even said "Let's see how loud we can be, let's see if we can make him move!" Him being me, I can only assume, since I was the only person in front of them. Then the movie started, and they were as quiet as the grave. I can only assume that it took all of their concentration to read the subtitles, because there was no action at all at the beginning. The movie was just great. The action was breath-taking, but the acting and the story were great as well, always a lovely treat. I'm certain that, rotten teen or no, it was a better choice than seeing Matt Damon and Henry Thomas play at being cowboys.
