19 December Yesterday, my flight left San Francisco at 7p, so I had the whole day to kill with no plans at all, but at the party Jen suggested getting together for lunch, so suddenly, there were plans after all! The night before, Lucy and I said our goodbyes, which was cool, because that means that I didn't have to get up at dawn in order to do so. It was so great that she invited me, so much fun, and so cool to be given a party like a visiting dignitary! Or rather, a Queen! But only because she was the power behind the throne.
Around 11.30a, a little later than I had meant, I took a cab to the airport in order to check in. Did you know that you can check in seven hours early? Well, you can, which left me footloose and fancy-free only with one fifty pound bag to carry! Ah, freedom. I decided to take the bus into SF, since the cab cost $12 for a five minute ride, clicking 20¢ every ten seconds or so--I have never seen a cab meter whiz through the numbers so quickly, I thought that it would explode from the effort. I can only imagine what an hour-long ride into the city would cost. Something over $100, I'll bet. Anyway, I needed to go to Market and Fifth to meet Jen, and so I went to the brace of busses waiting, and saw one that was going to Mission and First. "That sounds like Market and Fifth, I will get on this bus without asking any questions and hope for the best!" Sounds like a recipe for disaster, ain't? Well guess what? It worked! Sometimes my instincts are correct! Occasionally. Well, alright, this is the first time, but hey, maybe it'll happen again someday! It probably won't, but I'll keep thinking that it will.
I was late getting there, but not dreadfully so (okay, so it was dreadfully so, I have blocked the whole thing) and there were Jen and Joy Rothke, yes, the Joy Rothke! For those of you outside The Community, Joy is probably the most well-known reader of journals--she has never written one, but she is on Diary-L and everybody knows her. She is rather a controversial figure, in that she doesn't coddle and can be somewhat short with people who say foolish things, so therefor half of the people don't like her because of said shortness and the other half (including Jen and myself) secretly wish that they could skewer people quite so succinctly. Well, there she was, not ten feet tall and fanged, but little and curly-haired. She was really cool. The three of us went to the Haight (ah, I feel so cool tossing off phrases like that) and had lunch at this crepe place that actually had hard boiled eggs, so I was over the moon. It's hard being so picky. After lunch, we walked up the street and ditched Jen (okay, so she had to go back to work!) and then Joy and I walked back the way that we had come and shopped and gabbed. We are both big Outlander fans, so we talked about that at length. I know that it's a popular book, but Caoimhe, the person that gave me my copy, is the only fan that I know so finally having a conversation about it was a real treat! The Haight is pretty cool, like South Street in Philadelphia, only with more teenage runaway panhandlers. We had our very own, too, a boy who broke away from the crown to say in a loud, cheerful voice, "Hi, I'm Michael, and I'll be your panhandler this afternoon! Hey, c'mon, that made you laugh, that's worth something!" I gave him six bits, because he was right, it was an absolutely primo line. I finally got my very late ornament for the Betsy/Tacy ornament exchange (I got an ornament in the shape of a little wire chair, and if you can guess why, then you are a true fan of the books!), and some lemon verbena soap and hand lotion. I haven't bought stuff like that in ages, but the presents that I got at Lucy's set me off again. Hey, I forgot to mention the presents that I got at Lucy's! Bad me! I'll list them on Xmas day, though, as though I was planning to all along. Nobody will notice my fiendish plan!
At the place where we got off the bus, Joy and I split, promising to see each other in NY in the new year. I went back where I had started, to the San Francisco Centre, a big mall, and got a present for my friend Teri and more bath stuff for me at a great place called H2O Plus. I got a great mint set and a seaweed hair masque that I'm certain will complete everything and make my life worthwhile. Then I went back to the airport and went home.
