17 December So, the trip from NY. I went to the grocery store at 5.30a and was horrified to see that McDonald's was not open, so I thought that I could eat at the airport. I left the house only ten minutes after I meant to, didn't have to wait forever for a van, decided not to worry about a bus and took a taxi instead, arriving at the airport about ten minutes earlier than I meant to, checked in, then started looking for something to eat. I think I got spoiled by O'Hare, which is just lousy with places to eat and things to buy, and, let me stress, McDonald's. La Guardia, on the other hand, has exactly two places to eat, a Chinese place and a hot dog place. Now, I love hot dogs and Chinese food is relatively cool, but neither of them am I that enthusiastic about eating before 8a. So I just stayed hungry. Fortunately, on the plane they were good and kind enough to give me two or three of their smaller Wheaties flakes, so I wasn't exactly driven to cannibalism. Not quite. Honestly, though, what cheap bastards.
I slept for a few minutes on the first flight, the flight to Denver, but that was just about it. Then I flew to LA, where I was supposed to have a four hour layover before going onto San Francisco, and because of said supposed layover, I had to pick up my luggage at LAX and re-check it in. There was an earlier flight that I was able to switch to, thank goodness, because just about the last thing I needed was to sit in LAX for four hours on no sleep. So I went to SF, and got my luggage, and Lucy picked me up in her car. She told me that it was red and to watch for it, but since we were under some sort of tunnel and everyone's headlights were on, I couldn't tell a red car from any other colour, so I just sort of sat there looking hopefully, waiting for someone to slow down and wave or something. I looked like a golden retriever with a leash in her mouth. Then there she was! Practically the first words out of my mouth were, "I've been awake for thirty-six hours!" "Well, you should be a fun conversationalist tonight!" she answered. It was 5p, but I managed to stay awake until 10p and held my end of the conversation up more or less. Of course, I may well have been hallucinating.
