(The Mighty Kymm--you'll not see nothing like!)

14 December

So, yesterday I sent out my Christmas cards and discovered, to my horror, that 300 Xmas cards is chicken feed. When did I start knowing so many people?

Of course, the point isn't so much that I actually am in contact with these people on a daily basis--there are actually three lists, the main list, consisting of people that I have known throughout my life, the internet list, consisting of readers who requested a card and journallers that I am friends with, and the card exchange list, which is from my Betsy/Tacy mailing list.

That last one changes every year, as it's only for the people that sign up for it. It's pretty cool, and you really don't have to send to all of them, you can choose, but I like to do the whole list.

However, all of these lists together make up more like around 500 cards than 300, so I had to ask Mom to quickly send me 200 more.

I know that there are some people who actually remove people from their Christmas card lists as the years go on, you know, people that they haven't seen or spoken to in years, people who don't send Christmas cards back, people like that. This is not the Zuckert Way. Our way is that once you get on the list you have to die to get off it. Or at least move without a forwarding address.

I was going through my main list and saw name after name of people that I haven't seen in centuries, people that basically I knew for ten minutes five years ago, but one of the reasons that I never take people off is because sometimes I will run into someone after many years and they say "...And I always love getting your family Christmas card!"

My entire childhood I remember meeting people for the first time who would act as though they have known me my entire life, and this was because of the Christmas card. And I also remember saying to my father several years ago as we were opening our cards, "Who is this person?" and him answering, "O, he was a fellow elevator operator with me when I was in Washington in 1935." "Have you seen him since?" "No, just the Christmas cards."

And that's what I want. Someone to say to their mother, "Who is this Kymm Zuckert who sent us a card?" "O, I was in a play with her for three days forty years ago, and we've been exchanging Christmas cards ever since."
