7 December Yesterday, there were three small kindnesses. The first one was when I was leaving, and I got into the elevator with a guy that I know a little bit, but that I have always gotten the feeling that he didn't think much of me. I was going through my pockets, trying to find $1.50 for the bus, as my Metrocard had run out and I had no cash to get change with. I was digging through my pockets and muttering, when this guy who has never had a civil word to say to me asks, "Are you short? What do you need?"
"I'm thirty cents short for the bus."
We walked down the street together, chatting about the weather, then split up when we got to the bus stop. And I was overwhelmed. It was such a little thing, but it made the difference between making the movie and not.
After the movie, it was cold cold cold, so I decided to grab another bus--my transfer was probably still good. So I got on the bus and tried the transfer, but it had expired. Maybe that was yesterday's transfer, maybe the one in my coat pocket was the good one Nope. And I certainly hadn't any more change or any singles to get one of the other riders to break for me. So I told the bus driver (we were already moving) that I would have to get off at the next stop. And I stood there, ready to leave and walk for a few extra blocks, and he said, "Never mind, don't worry about it." So that was the second one, a free bus ride.
I got off at 42nd, ran into the bank and got some money, then realized that I was starved and cold, so I went into McDonald's and ordered a #5. The counter girl got my soda and my fries, but then realized that they were out of Chicken McNuggets and told me that she was really sorry, but that it would take a few minutes. "Not a problem," I said, and stood there reading my book and nibbling on my fries. I was a little afraid that I would end up with no fries before I got the rest of my meal, but I was really hungry and couldn't slow down. When she gave me the Nuggets, she took away my fries and gave me a whole new order of them. Just for waiting patiently and not complaining. Of course, the last thing that I needed was more fried, but I really like eating my meal altogether, and I thought that it was really sweet of her to do that.
And these three things, three little things really filled me with joy. And I wondered maybe that this sort of thing happens every day, but I don't really notice it. What small kindness caught you unaware? And we're still talking about wanting but not getting, funny journals, Christmas cards, silly winter clothes, spending money on crap, wanting, live sports, being thankful, and Thanksgiving and recipes.
Don't forget to read Erm, this week's Journal of the Week! Also don't forget, if you want a Xmas card and you have either never sent me your address, or you moved since last year, or you accidentally dropped off the list last year, let me know!
