5 December There's a new one up for yesterday.
So last night I went to the movies with Johnny Depp. And no, I don't mean that Johnny Depp was on the screen, though he was, I mean that we were together in the movie theatre. It wasn't just the two of us, of course, there was also Juliette Binoche and Lasse Hallström and Alfred Molina and Lena Olin and Harvey Weinstein. O, and about a thousand other people. Johnny and I were trying to be subtle. Yes, Tracing and I went to the New York premiere of Chocolat. I don't think that I have mentioned this yet, as it happened right before my reunion, but I am on the nominating committee for the SAG awards this year, which means lots of free movies in the mail and screenings and things, and also premieres! Which surprised the hell out of me, but I guess if you are going to have a big film premiere in a big movie theatre, you have to have somebody in there to fill up the seats besides celebrities and press. And that was us! It was really fun and exciting. There really was a red carpet and flashing bulbs and people screaming, though of course, we went in the regular way. Funnily, for a movie about chocolate, they weren't selling candy at the refreshment stand, I heard a man behind me complain. I can only assume that after seeing all of the yumminess on the screen, they feared that everyone would look at their boxes of Raisinettes in and spit them out in disgust. Before the movie, several people spoke--a representative from Miramax, the producer, David Brown, and then Lasse Hallström, who was just cute as a button. He said "Welcome to the second annual (I can't remember the term he used here--it's like a state of the union address, but for a company). This year we went from cider to chocolate, which I hope does just as well. And now, for the audio-visual portion of the evening!" And the film began. You could tell that it was an audience full of the people who made the film, because every single title card got applause. Even when the film proper had begun and there was dialogue. Anyway, it was just wonderful. A delightful fable, very light and airy, but not without a solid centre (I'm making it sound like a chocolate--it's a hard thing to avoid). The performances were wonderful, particularly Peter Stormare, whom I am madly in love with after Dancer in the Dark and the glorious Judi Dench. Juliette Binoche was terrific, and Alfred Molina managed not to make his role into a cartoon villain, which would have been very easy. The former brilliant child actor Hugh O'Conor, from My Left Foot and The Young Poisoner's Handbook is growing up nicely, and my date Johnny Depp did a quite credible Irish accent, mostly by keeping it very subtle. O, everyone was great. John Wood and Leslie Caron and Carrie-Ann Moss who must be a good actress, because I only once thought "What's Trinity doing in this French village in the 1950s?" I adored it.
Don't forget to read Erm, this week's Journal of the Week! Also don't forget, if you want a Xmas card and you have either never sent me your address, or you moved since last year, or you accidentally dropped off the list last year, let me know!
What did you ever really want but didn't get? Recommend a really funny journal. And we're still talking about Christmas cards, silly winter clothes, spending money on crap, wanting, live sports, being thankful, and Thanksgiving and recipes.
