3 December I realized, after writing yesterday's All Hat Entry, that I never talked about Sundance! I realize that everyone must be thinking "Ah, the brave little soldier, what a Spartan she is, laughing through her tears, the sad clown!" But that's not actually it. When I got to work on Friday, I was a nervous wreck--I probably checked the website about once a minute for about three hours. I was shaking and cold and I couldn't concentrate, I thought I was going to have a breakdown if I didn't find out soon, so I finally dropped and email to them. I said: "Hi, believe me when I say that I really don't mean to be annoying, and I am certain that all these annoying filmmakers will be up your collective butt all day, but I was just wondering when the list will go up on your webpage about what films were accepted? I think I'm going to have a stroke if I don't know soon." About a half hour later, they answered: "Greetings from Sundance! Please take a deep breath and, your blood pressure (ha, ha)! The list of films that were selected in all categories, will be posted on our website after the press release which begins at midnight, Monday December 4 and, continues Tuesday at midnight. The list in it's entirety will be posted by Wednesday, December 6th. Letters of regrets will be mailed out to those filmmakers whose films were not selected beginning, Monday December 4th. Best of Luck!" I wrote back saying thanks, that I was confused because the website said 1 Dec, and they wrote again saying thanks for telling them, and they fixed it. All that terror for nothing, and I'm going to have to go through it again on Wednesday. Unless I can somehow see the press release before that, which is certainly possibly with the net, but I don't know exactly how that would work. Two more days. I want to go, please God, let me go.
On Saturday I went to a screening for Shadow of the Vampire. I'd been looking forward to seeing it for a long time, and it was different than I expected. I don't really remember what I expected anymore, but I did like it very much. Cynthia was less impressed--she and Fran saw it at a later screening. I didn't love it as much as I thought I would, but I liked it very much indeed, and thought that the performances were excellent all around. John Malkovich was very intense, Willem Dafoe was brilliant, Eddie Izzard was great fun. He did silent film acting without commenting on it. The accents were very good, except for Cary Elwes', which was a little too Colonel Klink, Comic German #4 for my tastes.
Afterwards I went into work, not to work but to finally do the bloody Xmas card that Mom has been up my butt about for a month. It took a few hours, but I managed to do the photo collage, the cover and the poem (which attentive readers will remember is not actually a poem, but we call it that because when my father wrote it, it was a poem) and read it or describe it to Mom over the phone. This year, our card doesn't contain the word "fuck", but I do think that there is a "crap" in there, if I am recalling corrective. One must include the Traditional Christmas Vulgarity, mustn't one? Anyway, this means that it's time to put together my Xmas card list! Now, remember the rule--if you got a card last year, you needn't ask because it is impossible to get off the list, though I think that neither Amy nor Lucy got one last year due to I don't know what circumstance. However, really, unless you moved, you don't really have to send me your address, but everyone else, if you want a Xmas card, let me know!
And we're still talking about silly winter clothes, spending money on crap, wanting, live sports, being thankful, and Thanksgiving and recipes.
