So, I'm thinking of looking for a new job.

And yes, I know that I'm being a big old copycat, and that entry did, in fact, inspire me, but I was also inspired by the fact that I was in a meeting with the Raccoon before I read it, and she gave me the heads up that they were looking at my overtime, and because we now have the new guy, perhaps they were going to not let me do it anymore. And if that happened, I'd have to leave, because I cannot live on my base salary.

Now, I don't really want to leave, as I am used to it there, and I like the people, and I have alot of privileges that I wouldn't have anywhere else, like wearing jeans and coming in at 11a, but I also know that I have 4 solid years experience in Accounts Payable, and that's worth more than I'm making now, and I could probably find a much less corporate environment, not to mention that I could probably make good money as an accounting temp.

But then I thought that it would be silly to go from a job where I'm doing something that I'm none too interested in, straight to a job where I'm doing something that I'm not too interested in, and what do I really want to do? Well, of course, what I really want to do is be a photographer. But you can't make money as a freelance, not enough, anyway, and what I'd really love to do, what I think would be just the most interesting thing, would be to be a unit photographer for films or TV shows.

Of course, I have less than no idea how one goes about finding a job like that. I was talking to Cameron this weekend, and she said that I should shop my portfolio around to agencies, and I asked what does this entail, and she said that you look in the yellow pages under Photography Agencies or Ad Agencies, call every one of them and ask for an appointment with the art director.

She had to sign off then, so I didn't get a chance to ask when you are doing this shopping of portfolio, do you try to show a range in your book? Or is it like acting, where the actors always think that the more different things that they can do, the better, but the casting people and directors just want to know one thing that they can do, so that they can fix you in their minds. Too much range means too scattered to them, like you can't do twelve things as well as twelve people who each do one thing.

So should a portfolio show shots that are good but don't have a thing to do with anything that you can be hired for?

Anyway, these are not pressing questions, because even if the overtime disappears tomorrow, I can't do anything until after Christmas, because it would be silly to either get a new job and not be able to go home for Christmas, or be temping and not have a paid vacation.

And the other thing that Mom suggested was that I should try to get a job where Fran works, because they are a huge company and are always hiring, and they may well need photographers, because they make TV shows.

Anyway, I'm just mulling, but are there any photographers or artists out there who can give me some sort of tips or advice? People besides Rick, who is so cynical about his job that he could only talk me out of it!

I've gotten a lead on a truck and I thought of a couple friends who have dogs who might help (a matching puppy is the difficult part), and I called the guy who I need to do the voice over, and he's available. I still need a kid and some help shooting, so I am going to reprint my list from yesterday, so that anyone in the NY-NJ area who might be interested can see it.

1. I need a little boy, dark hair, about six years old or so, to play with a puppy, no lines.

2. I need a puppy (fairly young, but able to run) and an older dog of the same breed (the older dog is only for a photograph), the particular breed is not important, but it must be a doggish dog, not too bitty or fussy or modern. No shar peis or poodles.

3. I need an old-fashioned style pick-up truck from the 40s or 50s. This is for one very short shot, and I know that I'll have to rent it, but I thought I'd throw that out.

4. I need a fake Christmas wreath. I have the fake tree, but I'd really like a wreath on the grille of the truck, and I doubt I'll find a real one in August!

5. I need a pair of fuschia bunny fur earmuffs. I have a pair, but I can't find them, and they just looked so funny with my red coat. I cannot be the only person who owns them!

6. I need a couple of people to help with camera and sound. It won't be hard, I promise, you just have to do exactly as I say, and remember, we're all beginners at this, so it's not like you'd be coming in and we'd treat you like assholes because we know so much. There is no pay involved, but I'd feed you and you would get screen credit and a copy of the finished film. So, if you are available Labor Day weekend, Saturday and Sunday with a hold on Monday, let me know!

Almost last chance for the tape trade! Although, of course, if you expressed interest back before my other computer broke and you don't write me now, I'll contact you about it when I get my computer back, which is looking more and more like that will be sometime in 2002, so if you don't want to wait, contact me now!

How do you feel about your job? Are you doing what you really want to do?

And we're still talking about classic books that we hate, seeing things differently as one grows older, weird injuries, dreams that we thought were true upon awakening, weeping at movies, true love, prophetic dreams, thoughtful presents, publicity, irrational fears, swearing, and Australian (and New Zealand) yumminess.
