Bottom of Child

14 August

Okay, so, I'm going in.

I really don't want to go, as evidenced by the fact that I didn't go to bed until after two. I was pretending that there was a dilemma, but I knew perfectly well that I wasn't going in.

And then I realized that, right at the end of Friday, the part-timer gave me a great big pile of checks that she hadn't finished matching, and I decided to leave them for today, and she doesn't come in on Mondays, and I really shouldn't leave them until tomorrow.

So I'm going in. This whole being a grownup and feeling responsible thing is just a great big pain.

So, Friday and Saturday I went to the movies and I just haven't said a single word about that yet, have I? I also have tons of Rate-a-Trailer™s to do, but I'll leave those for another day.

So on Friday I was looking for something to see, and decided on the re-release of Blood Simple.

I was twenty when it came out originally, and I loved it with all of my heart, though I also realized that it was a big piece of showboating. Since I was currently a student at NYU, I recognized the "I just graduated from NYU!" flourishes all over the damn thing, and show-offy and proud of themselves, and of course, usually directing that calls attention to itself isn't good, this was wonderful, because it had such a joy in its self-consciousness. Like they thought that just in case they were never allowed to do another movie, they'd best put all the fun stuff in this one.

Well, I had read that this was the first director's cut that was actually shorter than the original, but I didn't think that they could have removed any of the cool stuff. But I left the theatre thinking "Weren't there more camera tricks than that?"

Maybe there weren't, maybe I just haven't seen it in a long time, maybe it's just that I'm different rather than the movie is, but I didn't get that sense of freewheeling joy anymore.

The story and the plot and the acting are still great, of course. M. Emmett Walsh was quite astonishingly good. And, because he is not the kind of actor who gets big giant close-ups, I never before noticed the fact that he has the most expressive eyes that I have ever seen. They tell long stories all by themselves. Which is, of course, great for a movie actor.

They all were great, and the whole thing was so tightly plotted, and it's just a really great film, fancy camera dances or no. O, and that was Holly Hunter as a voice-over on Maurice's answering machine, which I didn't notice the first time, probably because she was an unknown at the time.

(cup of tea)

I don't have time to talk about Saturday, I've gotta get into the shower and I'm supposed to be looking after these kids.

Remember my tape trade from last month? Well, I gathered everybody's names, then promptly broke my computer and all the names are still on it, but it's at the shop and I don't have them now, and I don't feel like waiting anymore. So, if you are still interested, write me again!

Greenspun appears to be down, and though I included a question in yesterday's entry, I forgot to create it there, and now I can't. So, all I can say is click here, and I'll add the questions as soon as I can!

What did you read or watch years after you did for the first time and found that you didn't like it so much as when you were younger?

And we're still talking about bizarre injuries, dreams that we thought were true upon awakening, weeping at movies, true love, prophetic dreams, thoughtful presents, publicity, irrational fears, swearing, and Australian (and New Zealand) yumminess.
