26 October I'm reading four books right now. I used to do this all the time when I was in high school and college--I'd go to the library and get out a million books that I wanted to read all at once, so I would. Well, not the whole million, but I'd take three or four or five books and I'd read a chapter of one then a chapter of the next, etc., in a round robin. And then when I'd finish one, I'd replace it with another, so there were always the same amount of books. I was hugely fetishistic about the whole thing, and I had utterly forgotten about it until last week when I went to the library.
I went simply to return my books (late, but only a couple of weeks late, not like last time), and thought that I'd get one or two new books. Ha! I should have known that there is no such thing as my going to the library and getting a normal amount of books. It's like the Scholastic books when we were kids, remember? These little paperbacks for like 50¢ and on book delivery day everyone would have these decorous little piles of one or two on their desks, and I'd have seventeen. As I staggered to the check-out desk, I asked the librarian if there was a limit, and she said yes, you could only take out thirty books at once, and since there was still one that I hadn't returned, I could only take out twenty-nine. And that was exactly what I had chosen. Do I know my way around a library or not!
So I took my twenty-nine books, the whole Anastasia series (there're about another seven than from when I last read them!), the whole Betsy-Tacy series (can't find my copies!), the rest of the Narnia books, and a couple of other random books, and I just wanted to eat them up, inhale them, skip work and stay off the computer and just read read read. But I was already reading a book! Tragedy! I was in the middle of Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married, but I wasn't entirely crazy about it, and I didn't much want to put off reading all of my favourite books in the world for the sake of a book that I wasn't enjoying (it's nothing like as good as Watermelon--the ending has been too obvious almost from page one, and I just want to smack Lucy, she's such a weakling), so I picked up three others and started shuffling them like cards. So I started out with Lucy, Betsy-Tacy, Anne of the Island, and Anastasia Krupnik, finished Betsy-Tacy and Anastasia, and now am reading Betsy-Tacy and Tib and Anastasia Again. I'm in fucking heaven.
