1 October Man, I hate the end of the quarter. I also hate that I am so firmly entrenched in this whole finance thing that I actually know what "the end of the quarter" means! We haven't been able to cut any checks this week, we have had to slam as many invoices into the system as possible, I was there until 10.30 on Wednesday doing that very thing, and we had to void out almost all of last week's checks in order to beef up the number of unpaid invoices in the system, and then yesterday we were told that the number was too high! The exact thing happened last quarter. I can see my future stretching ahead of me...
I was reading a two week old New York magazine yesterday, and it mentioned Billy Bragg's concert at Town Hall that I skipped because I have seen this tour five times already over the past year and just didn't feel like seeing it again, and it said that there was a new album out called Reaching to the Converted. "A new Billy album? Why the hell didn't anybody tell me?!" So I decided to pair my need for a Quest to Krispy Kreme (I'm not made of stone, after all) with a copy of this Unheard Treasure. So I left work at 6.30p because there wasn't a thing to do (it all has to get done today instead) and jumped on a bus heading downtown. The Funny New York Moment of the day was a little loony sitting at the front, and then a big giant loony dropped down next to him like a sack of cement, apparently taking more than his share of seat, because the Little Loony leapt up as though stuck by a pin, screaming "Don't PUSH me!" The Big Giant Loony just sat there as though he didn't hear a thing, and the Little Loony stood grumbling next to the driver for a couple of stops, and then, five minutes later, as he exits, the Big Giant Loony starts yelling at him, acting like he was chasing him off the bus. The Little Loony got hysterical, and they traded death threats as the bus pulled away. The Big Giant Loony then commented genially to the rest of the bus about crazy people and how it was a good thing that he, the Big Giant Loony, had reacted in the restrained manner that he had,or who knows what the Little Loony would have done? A crazy man calling someone equally crazy, crazy! The stifled giggling heard on the bus wasn't all coming out of me.
So I got off on 23rd St. and got three Krispy Kremes. Two were gone by the end of the block. Sugary fingers, sticky chin. I walked to Virgin at Union Sq. and thought that in addition to Billy I'd see about maybe getting Bif Naked's I Bificus, NIN's new album, The Fragile (hey, did you see Trent in Rolling Stone? Great article, but why was it paired with pictures of Rupert Everett?), Tori's new album To Venus And Back, and John Prine's new album In Spite Of Ourselves. Found Billy quickly enough (it's an album of B sides and live cuts and things) and NIN and Tori, but then thought that maybe I wouldn't get those two, couldn't find Bif Naked for the life of me, then searched through all of John Prine in the folk section without luck, because he has about 75 million albums and I couldn't remember the title of the new one! So instead I got Steeleye Span's Sails of Silver, Maddy Prior's Year and a compilation disc called Heart of England. What the hell, I'm easy!
Shit, I just remembered that it's the first of the month and I have are design in the wings that I forgot about! Ah well, there's another thirty days of the month, one more day of butterflies won't destroy the world.
