So yesterday was the first Saturday in a year where I could do whatever I wanted without having to see if someone else wanted to do it too. Or it would have been, if I hadn't had rehearsal. The funny thing was that on the way to said rehearsal, I ran into Tony, my friend from high school, on the subway. I have seen this man three times since we graduated, once with Robert and Nik after my show (see link above) and twice by co-incidence on the subway. Bizarre. He said that he had been reading this page, and asked how the Russian show was going, so this is the third person whom I have seen recently (the other two being Lee and Diane from Love Creek) who knows everything that's been going on with me even though I haven't seen them for ages.
Did I mention that we actually did find the last page of the show? It may be the lamest ending Chekhov ever wrote, not much improving on when it ended in the middle of a sentence, practically, but it did add a whole new unexpected character to the show! I'll bet the director was surprised when she saw that!
Afterwards I saw Election. I really wanted to see the sneak preview of Notting Hill as well, but it was sold out. Election ended up being good enough on its own, though. Very funny, very dark. I kept thinking about how Diane said that she was like Tracy when she was in school. The movie deals with very interesting themes, about morals and ethics, but also about how one tiny action can change everything. I tried to work out the one thing that would have made the story turn out differently, the one tiny thing, accidental or purposely, that, if not done, would have changed everything, and I realized that every moment, every action, was the one thing. It was only this perfect combination of people and actions and feelings and thoughts that made the story what it was.
Tracy Morgan's on his way out, I'll bet. Last night on SNL, the first time a camera was anywhere near him was at 12.54a, never a good sign. I would have waved goodbye to him at the end, but he must have been in the back of the mob. Bye Tracy! Have a nice career doing something else!
