26 March Yesterday was just one of those days at work. Towards the end of the day I felt as though The Raccoon and I were standing on the edge of a cliff, battered by the wind. In the picture in my head we were also wearing long skirts and shawls and were in black and white, so I can only assume that this is from a movie. Wuthering Heights, maybe? My point being, from all sides we were battered! People demanding checks to the left of us, people refusing to give us money to pay people yet getting angry when vendors would cut us off to the right of us, and into the valley of death rode the six hundred. Everything is always an emergency. Nik came into our office and congratulated us on not paying whomever we didn't pay so that they ran out of the plastic slide holders (without them they cannot send out the cases). I refused to accept blame for that, since we had actually paid that vendor, and it turned out that our standing order had run out and said vendor had neglected to mention it. But still... They won't increase our budget. They just won't. But neither will they decrease spending. I had the bright idea of asking for a temporary increase--just for a month so that we can get out from under this damn backlog. And if we asked for a extra $500,000 a week, we just might get an extra $250,000 a week, and that would really help. Any less than that would be basically useless. The Raccoon thinks that we just might get it. God, I hope so.
Another thing that made yesterday the day that it was, was the news that my friend Bill is dying. It wasn't exactly the biggest shock in the world, as he has had cancer for the past year, went through chemo once, then it returned and he had chemo again. I got the call from Sharon yesterday that he had been moved to intensive care and that she didn't think that waiting to go see him on the weekend was a really good idea. I tried to go over after work, but going crosstown took so long and then I kind of got lost and it was around 9p when I gave up, thinking that they probably wouldn't let me see him. I'll try again tonight. Except that I have rehearsal with Sharon.
When I got home, there were two more tapes waiting for me, from Dorothy Rothschild! One tape of a couple of folk artists and one tape of Canadian music that she copied from an old boyfriend. Old boyfriends make great mix tapes! I haven't listened to the latter yet, but the former is swell!
