21 March Yesterday, the first day of spring, was just the most beautiful first day of spring that anyone has ever seen! It was bright and bonny, and so fine that I actually went out to the store with Cynthia without a jacket! O please let's have a good spring this year, rather than a ten minute window between winter and summer!
Here is my impression of spring in New York:
So yesterday we had Bonnie's birthday party! Her birthday was on Monday, of course, but between the show and the this and the that, we couldn't have the party that day, so we waiting until we could do it properly. So Cynthia and I went out to Toys R Us and got party stuff and Pooh stuff and I got her a plush bunny with carrots on his feet, and spent a happy twenty minutes in the Barbie aisle. I haven't had a decco at what they've been doing with Barbie lately, and it was really fun! There's Crippled Barbie (actually "Becky, Barbie's Friend--She's the School Photographer!") in her wheelchair, and there's this new Barbie with stick-on butterfly tattoos, short shorts and a crocheted halter top that was clearly Slut Barbie and her friend Crack Whore Barbie, along with their deadly 10th Ave. rival, Homosexual Prostitute Ken. There is also Nascar Barbie, whom I only assume exists because they thought that Trailer Park Trash Barbie would be too much.
Then we had the party, which was pizza and cupcakes with the family and Katie's dad, John Daddy, and I stuffed a cupcake down my throat before running into the city to have a quick dinner before the show with my friend Robert from high school. We haven't seen each other for four years, but I do a show with naked actors and goodness me, he finds a reason to spend the weekend in New York! Whaddaya know about that? We ate dinner and he gave me a bar of soap in the shape of a gravestone (very Boston, he said), and a mix tape in trade from last year's tape trade, and some pictures from our class reunion in 1992, then went over to the show. The audience was packed in like sardines (including Nik), and laughed uproariously and had a wonderful time. Afterwards, everyone was complimenting me about what a good job I had done with the show, but honestly, you take a script that good and a bunch of actors that good , it doesn't make much work for me, really! I expect more kudos when I do a really poor script with mediocre actors and force it to be something not half bad--this show was cake!
Then Nik and I went to the bar and had a drink, then Robert joined us after he watched the whole rest of the show, then another friend from school, Tony, came and we talked about high school for a couple of hours. Mostly they were telling me all of the who slept with who stuff that I never knew. Apparently, they whole boys dorm were having sex with each other! "That wasn't going on in the girls dorm!" I cried. Not to mention the fact that everyone was having sex with the teachers. I never knew any of that stuff!
Then Tony and Robert left and Chris, who is in the 7p show, sat down. Remember Chris? Before Nik? So it was very funny sitting at a table with the both of them. Chris insisted on talking about headshots for awhile, then apologized to Nik for being so boring, just as Tony had apropos all of our high school chatter. "Nik doesn't mind," I said, "He's resilient. He's hardy!"
