8 March So Saturday I mostly spent dealing with the OP queue, cringing at times when I saw the dates on which some of those people had submitted themselves! At least they were all from this year. Mostly. I think. Anyway, I also did the dishes and bathed, but otherwise just puttered until it was time to leave the house and go meet Nik. We decided to see Analyze This at the 10.15 showing, and he suggested buying the tickets over the phone. I thought he was just being an old woman, but I did so, and when we got to the theatre was I ever glad! The movie was not only sold out but the theatre was surrounded by a clamouring throng, begging and weeping for tickets! I know it seems as though I am exaggerating, but I am not--it as like being at a rock concert. I couldn't figure out why, it's just a little Billy Crystal comedy for heavens sake, but then, of course, I realized that it was because this was the only new thing to do in all of New York City! Memorial Day weekend can't come soon enough for us New Yorkers--we need entertainment! We need fresh meat!
The movie, by the way, was a real treat. Much funnier than I expected, with excellent performances by Crystal and Robert DeNiro and Lisa Kudrow and Chazz Palminteri, but the best of all was Joe Viterelli as this big fat mob henchman with a face like a plate of old meat, who handily stole every scene he even came near. It was a real treat to watch, like Robert Forster in Jackie Brown. The neatest thing, though, was at the very very beginning, when, in a flashback they showed DeNiro's dad as a young man, and I practically choked on my popcorn when I saw that he was played by my friend Bart Tangredi! It was a silent bit, but he had a big honkin' closeup and it was so cool because the whole movie is about DeNiro's coming to terms with the memory of his dad, i.e. my friend Bart Tangredi!
Yesterday I rehearsed the naked play nakedly for the first time, which meant that I had my head in my hands for half of the show. And when I would stop them to direct them about something...well, have you ever noticed that it's really hard to have a conversation with a naked person? I mean, unless you've had sex with them or you're going to have sex with them or you're related to them? Well, I found it odd. I haven't seen a penis in the flesh, so to speak, in many a year, and I couldn't even look 'cause I had to be all professional and directorial and stuff! Besides, it's just so funny. I mean, it's an hysterical script anyway, but with the actual nakedness...well, I think that the actress who does not get naked but has to just sit there onstage with the naked people should get a big fucking gold star for not laughing or smiling or anything until after it was all over!
And then after that I went to Cynthia's cluster concert, which is four church choirs getting together and singing as a bigger choir. Even with four choirs, though, there were still only four men. The show was great, though, and the best part of it was that the audience got to sing, too, which was a fun surprise for me! And they didn't pander to the audience by changing the keys either, which meant that Jacob's Ladder went up to a G. I could see people's eyes crossing with the strain.
Well, we have a third! Stanley Kubrick died yesterday. I joked that the studio offed him so that they could actually make their July opening date for Eyes Wide Shut, as there is now no threat that he will take it back into the editing room or shoot for another six months. He was a great talent and it is a great loss, but boy do I hope that it's a good movie. It's always a shame when the last thing a person does before they shuffle off this mortal coil is a dog. Like if Peter Sellers ha only managed to die a little earlier, his last movie would have been the brilliant Being There rather than the revoltingly bad Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu. Stanley Kubrick should have a great film for his last.
Tape trade, tape trade, don't forget the tape trade! Jump on that bandwagon, baby!
