(The Mighty Kymm--you'll not see nothing like!)

1 March

Yesterday was a very full day. I always feel proud when I have actually accomplished something during the weekend, even if it's just the dishes and the laundry. But this weekend was o so much more!

First was rehearsal (which is why my update went up so late yesterday, sorry guys!). I, unlike many directors, make no plans in advance, do no blocking, do no homework, not a sausage. This is partially to keep my options open when I see what my actors come up with and partially due to just crippling bone-idleness on my part.

So I started out with nothing, and three hours later I had a blocked show! A very funny blocked show with lots of Wacky Bits, as well! Well, the first couple of pages aren't blocked, because we kind of have to be in the space with the actual furniture in order to block it properly, but the rest of it is set in stone, baby!

Then, after that, Cynthia and I went to Caldor's!

Caldor's is kind of like Target, and it's going out of business, so the locusts, me and Cynthia included, are descending in full force.

Everything was at least 30% off, and I thought that I would just get some socks or something, and I did, but I also got a new toaster, since my old one was living on borrowed time, which only cost $5.99(!!!), and a new cd boombox (I know that I just got a new one a few months ago, but it stopped working and I haven't bothered to fix it yet and it was so cheap that I couldn't resist, and a Discman, which I have wanted for so long, and a floor lamp for only $20!

The store was completely trashed and the staff was surly, but what do you expect? Where is the incentive to hop to it when your job is basically gone, what with the entire chain going under and all. And there really were a quite astonishing number of unsold Blooming Onion makers.

Cynthia and I decided that that was why the chain had gone out of business--because they had sunk all of their capital into a giant stock of Blooming Onion makers, hundreds of thousands of them, but they only sold eleven, because no-one in their right mind would want to deep-fry an onion in the privacy of their own homes.

Didja see Alice in Wonderland last night?

I thought it was pretty good, especially Gene Wilder, but Tina Majorino was a bit of a black hole as Alice. I mean, it's not news that every single other character is more interesting than Alice, since she is really the eyes though which the audience looks, but ol' Tina was the dullest Alice in captivity.

And her dialect coach should be shot, since her accent was almost just right but for one major sound. I mean, obviously she could do it, so it's the teacher's fault that she kept saying "lost" as "lorst"!

I haven't talked about Gene Siskel yet, but as I wept while watching the tribute to him on Siskel and Ebert last night, I figure that it's time.

Last Saturday I spent most of the evening upstairs with Cynthia and Fran, watching the boxing on HBO, and when I came downstairs and logged on, I found about ten e-mails saying "Remember when you were wondering what happened to Gene Siskel? Well, he died tonight."

It really threw me for a loop, you know? I mean, they were, as Amanda said, Sisklandebert, the two-headed film critic, and the idea that one of them could be gone was rather rocking to my world-view. He was just one of those people on TV that are part of your lives without your really thinking about it.

Why am I crying about a dead film critic, for heaven's sake? Because it wasn't just any old critic, it was Gene, that's why.
