27 January The Raccoon was out sick yesterday, presumably because she wants to make my life a living hell. I can imagine no other reason to abandon me again when we are so behind and there is so much to do and I had to leave at 6p 'cause I was meeting Tracing for dinner! I feel very ill-used!!
So I worked like a whirlwind all day, rashly promising way too many people that we would pay them this week, and entered invoices and logged the mail and really got an extraordinary amount done, but I didn't stop for a second, so by the time I got downtown I was ready to gnaw off my own arm out of sheer starvation. So we went to a Brazilian cafe and both ate hamburgers, because when we want hamburgers, bizarre foreign foods hold no temptation (or even Brazilian steaks at $18 a pop), and talked and talked and talked. Funny to think that we both write about our lives and both read about each other's lives, and yet there was so much to say! One would imagine conversations like "O, hey, the funniest thing just happened..." "Yeah, I know." (silence but for the desultory clinking of forks against plates).
Then I showed her the deli that sells British candy near where I did Dracula (though we had to go the long way because I couldn't find it unless I came at it from the opposite direction--the direction that I had always came from when I was doing the show), and they didn't have Twiglets for Tracing the Twiglet Junkie, but she got some Crunchies and wine gums and things, so the trip was not a loss on her end, and I got lots of Crunchies and Bounty bars 'cause those are my favourites. And I got a couple of extra bars and some Smarties and a Picnic bar for a book trade I'm doing, two Pippi Longstocking books for a couple of bars of chocolate, not a bad trade, by me!
Then we walked to the subway. And when we got there, we decided to walk to the next subway stop. And when we got there, we decided to walk to the next subway stop. And when we got there, we decided to walk to the next subway stop. And when we got there, she decided that enough was enough, since she was actually walking in the opposite direction of her house, so she got on the train and I carried on walking to the van, which was, at that point, only one more subway stop away. If, at the restaurant, one of us had suggested walking three miles uptown, the other would have no doubt been taken aback, but it was a nice evening and not too late and not that cold and we were having such a good time talking that it turned out to be a great idea! And here's Tracing's take on the evening!
