5 January I'm back and I'm cold. It was like 75 degrees in Los Angeles Sunday, and now here I am in New Jersey, remembering that I really need to buy a space heater. Of course, I just flew over NNYOLA (i.e. the rest of the country, "Not New York Or Los Angeles") and realize that it certainly could be worse. Every time I looked out the window it looked like a massive sugar bowl had been upended over the land.
So again, I hugely lucked out when it came to traveling the day after everything was shut down due to inclement weather. I am the charmed traveler! I mean, LAX was a zoo--there was a line for curbside check-in all the way down the block (and the porter looked at the ticket for when I was originally supposed to leave, the ticket that I changed, and announced that I was not on the flight, nearly giving me a heart attack before I realized that he was looking at the wrong page), and there were another million people waiting at the gate, but that flight left on time. My flight in Chicago left an hour late, I know not why, but there sure were mountains of snow on the runway, so I was glad that it was only an hour.
Of course, when I got to the Port Authority and called Cynthia, she was all irritated at me for being so late when it was their wedding anniversary and they wanted to get down to celebrating it, dammit! I think she realized that I was punished enough, though, when she picked me up and I was so cold! I hadn't packed gloves. I hate winter. So she forgave me enough that she gave me my Christmas presents, which were entirely bath-oriented: a bath caddy that you put across the tub and that she had to drive to hell and gone to get in the adjustable style, and, from Lush, Antiphilitron shampoo, Okra conditioner, an Almond Snowcake (soap, I think), a chocolate bath melt and a tangerine bath bomb. I am clam happy. Even with the cold.
Man, everyone who I went to NYU with is in the papers! When I was at Disneyland, I brought a bunch of newspapers and an old Variety, and literally read about four people whom I haven't seen for ten years! I mean, I don't even count Felicity Huffman (she was very funny on Leno last night!), Gina Gershon (did an excellent Antigone at the age of 19 or 20) and Bridget Fonda (in my French class. Sweet, but very slutty!) anymore. So, on Friday I learned that Jace Alexander (Jane Alexander's son) directed a movie, Jessica Lundy (one of the lesbians on Friends) is in a play at the Public, and, this one was my favourite, Alec Mapa, is in a new movie called Playing by Heart and has an all star cast, got a special mention in a review. I have forgotten who the fourth person is. Anyway, Alec Mapa was one of those people who was so brilliant that he should have burst to stardom that very minute, but he was a very difficult type--petite, Filipino, obviously gay--that he would have to carve out a niche and it may never happen. But it looks like he's getting some attention! I mean, Sean Connery's in the film, Gena Rowlands, Ellen Burstyn, Madeleine Stowe, Anthony Edwards, plus like seven more! These are people who can easily take up a whole review, but the guy in Variety took a paragraph to say that, among all this wattage, Alec Mapa as a drag queen is especially good. I have met few people who deserve it more.
