4 January Last day at home. Possibly forever, because this year Mom really is at last going to have to tear this house down and build the new one. I have thought ever Christmas since 1994 was going to be the last one, but I think it's an insurance thing that she has to start this year of give the money back. I will miss my house so much. I hate change. And even if it is falling apart, even if it is just dreadful at this point, I don't care, this is the house I was born in.
So, for my last day at home, I insisted on sleeping in. Mom kept saying things like "So, if you're still asleep at 10.30p, I'll wake you up," and I would cry "No no no, don't wake me up no matter what!!" It all ended up moot, as I woke up at 9.15a, but for this vacation, that was sleeping in.
Then I went and visited the last of my friends, Rita. She was away for most of my trip, so we just squeaked under the wire, here, but we did make it. We exchanged Christmas gifts--I gave her six different bottles of the hottest hot sauce imaginable (this is the gift that I bought on 26 December of last year and have saved all this time) and she gave me a vanilla candle, a slinky and a little leopard drawstring pouch. Then we went to the movies and saw Waking Ned Devine, which was absolutely charming. I know everyone has been saying "It's this year's Full Monty, but it reminded me very much of Local Hero instead. Then we went back to her house and I visited with her and her husband, Simon, and watched a short film that they made called Deadly Diva, sort of this live-action cartoon in their band personas. It was hilarious. Check check and check, I saw everyone! I meant to see Melanie again, but there ended up being no time.
And, speaking of seeing people, I counted up how many on-line journalists I have met, and, as of this vacation, my count is now 21. 21! Man, everyone comes to New York! And the list is Amanda Page ( Amanda's Precipice), Melody Paulk ( Fresh Little Puddles), Tracing, Jen Wade ( Like Sands Through the Hourglass...), Gregory Alkaitis-Carafelli ( so.anyway.org), Chrissy (Yada Yada-defunct), Ben Brown ( benbrown.com), Terry Baker ( Terrapin Dream), Steve Brownlee (getting a new site, but I don't remember the URL!), Sandra Mizumoto Posey ( De Novo), Juan Maldonado (Mi Vida Loca-defunct), Renee Daughtry ( Just Me), Snoozebar (defunct), Scott Anderson ( Words), Michael Walsh ( Irregular Joe), Damiana ( Saran Warp), Mad Brunette ( One Mad Brunette), Lucy Huntzinger ( Aries Moon), Beth ( If You See Her, Say Hello), Jan Yarnot ( Mossyrocks News) and Amanda Erickson ( L.A. Stories)! I feel like a trophy hunter. The only one I have yet to bag is Diane Patterson--we missed each other when I was in town. Again. I have decided that she doesn't exist. Scoop! Nobody Knows Anything is actually written by committee! Nobody really has that cool a life.
