28 February Well, yesterday was a very exciting day, involving the meeting of yet another on-line journalist, along with several actual characters from her journal! And once again, they did not turn out to be psychopaths. Instead, they were theatre people, which actually is fairly psychopathic, but it's a brand that I am extremely comfortable with. It was Center Beth, along with her boyfriend Brian, her roommate Andy, and a guy who...I think doesn't have a pseudonym so I guess he's just plain Mike. I was slightly taken aback when there were four people rather than two, since I'm so shy around strangers, but everyone was so nice that I got over all that very quickly. I was carrying a copy of I Capture the Castle, a really wonderful children's book that I picked up on Beth's recommendation and that I had started reading the other day. I thought that if she hadn't recognized me from my pictures, that the book would be a dead giveaway. I should have put a rose in it, like in She Loves Me/You've Got Mail.
We went out to eat at a Chinese place, and I was chagrined that I, who am part of the theatre world in Manhattan (at least peripherally), know less about the theatre world in Manhattan than they did, and that Mike, who is still in high school, comes to the city practically every weekend to see shows! I haven't seen a thing on Broadway since my birthday, and that is going to change. I live here, for God's sake! Andy and Mike were seeing Chicago (Beth and Brian were seeing You're a Good Man Charlie Brown) and Andy told me that if you get there at 7a you can get $20 seats that day, and Bebe was back in the show! So I'm doing that this week. Maybe Thursday. Because I can get up at 5.30a, get to the theatre, get my wristband, go home for a couple of hours, go back to the theatre at 10a to actually buy the ticket, then get to work at 11a! They also told me that Cabaret was having $25 rear mezzanine seats. Man, when I was in college I knew all of the cheap ways to get seats and who had standing room for $10, etc. etc., but now I have forgotten.
At dinner, Beth and I were discussing journal gossip, of course, and Mike got really interested.
"Wow! That sounds like a soap opera!"
I think he will be sucked into the vortex, as we all are.
We all had a really good time (or at least I did! I guess we'll have to wait for Beth's entry on the subject to find out if they did or not!) and they went to their respective theatres, and I went to work to pick up Nik. We had made no particular plans, other than the generally accepted "It's Saturday Night And We Always See Each Other On Saturday Night" plan, so I picked up the paper, but we've pretty much seen everything good, and he wasn't interested in seeing Hillary and Jackie or Gods and Monsters or God Said Ha, so we just went to an Irish bar and he had Guinness (as he calls it, "A beer milkshake") and I had a screwdriver and we talked and watched part of the basketball, and had a nice social time. It was a very good Saturday.
