(The Mighty Kymm--you'll not see nothing like!)

11 February

I stayed at work yesterday until 11p. God only knows why. I mean, I got stuff done, but why did I not just leave at 8p or whatever?

I am an enigma to myself.

On my way home, I stopped at that bastion of evil, Virgin Records, which is very evil indeed. The last time I went was to get Ani's new album, and I walked in, bought it, and left.

I did not do that twice in a row.

Of course, I only wanted the Rushmore soundtrack, and I did get it, but I also got Christine Lavin's One Wild Night, Ani DiFranco and Utah Phillips' The Past Don't Go Anywhere, John Prine, Emmylou Harris' Spyboy and The McGarrigle Hour, all of which are John Scalzi fault.

The last two can be traced directly to him ( here and here), but the other three are because I was in the folk section looking for The McGarrigle Hour, so I think that they can be blamed on him as well.

Luckily, I couldn't remember the names of any of the other people he was gushing about, what with me being the most astonishingly easily influenced person alive. A tower of Jello, that's me.

But that's not all! I also got four DVDs, which I can lay at no-one's feet but my own. I got The Big Chill, Four Weddings, While You Were Sleeping and Evil Dead 2.

I couldn't help it! I am not made of stone!

I think I have an idea now of what it is like to be a tech support person.

You see, I had left a file that I really wanted on my mother's computer that she has never touched in her life, so I girded up my loins, told her to go to Kinko's and buy a disk, then call me and I'd talk her through it.

It took about 40 minutes, and we were both drenched in sweat by the end of it, but she did copy the file onto the disk and learn to play Solitaire. The thing that made it as difficult as it was was that when I asked her to tell me what the screen said, she had absolutely no idea which bit was important, so she would just read me all of it, and concept like "double-click" and "highlight" were met with blank stares. I assume. Since we were on the phone.

I kept hearing muffled giggles around me as I said "Okay, take the arrow and point it at the little minus sign in the top left hand corner, and then double-click on it. No, double-clicking isn't clicking twice, it's clicking twice really fast!"

And "What does it say in the To box? No, not 2, to!"

And "Just fucking click anywhere in the box!" which most tech support cannot say, no matter how much they would like to.

After the file was copied, I showed her how to play Solitaire, and her delighted squeals (yes, really!) were so cute that I forgave her for not magically knowing how to work a computer!

Do you remember when Solitaire was new and exciting?

Couple of good links lately, Tuesday I was a featured site at Planet Click, and then yesterday I was informed that my Randy Newman page was linked from the Blast From the Past site!

Shit, I gotta update that page, it's embarrassing...
