(The Mighty Kymm--you'll not see nothing like!)

9 February

Have I mentioned that Nik has gone back to college?

He has decided to get his bachelor's degree in creative writing, since he didn't manage to go to college right after high school like everyone else.

Well, he did actually, for a couple of semesters, but got incompletes in like every class and dropped out. He went back to college several years later and made the Dean's list, but left again to work on a commercial fishing boat in Alaska for six months.

Anyway, now he's thirty and has decided to get his degree. I am very proud of him, except for the fact that his thirst for knowledge is ruining my social life!

Okay, not really, but it has inconvenienced me. When he first got his class schedule, I had a glance at it, and was pleased to see that his last class on Monday finished at 5.30p, leaving him free for our every other week standing date for the SAG screening. But when he got his final schedule, he found out that one of his classes that he thought was once a week (World of the Vikings, I think), is also on Mondays from 8-9.30p.

Which means that I had to leave work at 5.30p yesterday and he had to tear downtown and we went to the 6p screening rather than the 8.30p, but we could only do that because the movie in question was only 95 minutes long. We'll try Tuesday next time, maybe, though that means that we would have to leave work at 8.15p, which is early for him.

If only he would have chosen to remain ignorant. Of Vikings, at any rate...

The movie, by the way, was Still Crazy, which I don't think is open yet.

It's a completely charming movie about a 70's rock band reuniting in the 90's, and yes, it's a little Spinal Tap-y, but not so much so. Hilariously funny, with wonderful performances by Stephen Rea, Tim Spall and Billy Connolly (who are always great), but the best of all was Bill Nighy as the lead singer--the kind of completely useless, slightly fragile man who could drown in the rain. He just totally broke my heart, even as he was being an asshole.

Go see it. And Rushmore. And Shakespeare in Love. Off you go.

Yowsa.

Have you ever had something forever and never used it and finally do and it's really wonderful and you don't know why you have been wasting your life not using said item?

Well, for me it was Honey and Oatmeal Scrub Mask from The Body Shop. I have had that for centuries, hell, I moved with it, and I must have used it once, because there were finger-marks in it, but I don't actually remember doing so, and therefor I was just floored at how soft my skin was after I used it in the bath last night.

Great stuff. My cheek felt smooth as a baby's behind, only with a trifle less diaper rash.

Happy birthday (slightly late) to Tess, Colleen, Never and especially the new Baby Groundhog, Morgan Elizabeth, born on 2 Feb 1999 at 12.34p.

Congrats Deb and Dutch!!

Quick thoughts on the Oscar nominations.

Hooray Benigni! What a weird Best Actor selection. I mean, everyone but Tom Hanks would be the longshot any other year, but this year he's the longshot, since he's already won two! I can't believe that The Truman Show was shut out like that, though I can believe that Rushmore was! Though Bill Murray did have a shot. I think this is the first year that two foreign language actors were nominated.

Wait, wait, wait, I just looked up the music nominees, and Randy Newman was nominated twice, for Pleasantville and for A Bug's Life!! Possibly three times, since I don't know the name of the song he wrote for Babe Pig in the City, and a tune from that was nominated.

He's gotta win for something this year!
