(The Mighty Kymm--you'll not see nothing like!)

30 December

I'm going to The Merriest Place On Earth today, i.e. Disneyland during the holiday season, so this'll have to be short.

Yesterday I finally saw John, for whom I left like four messages and thought that he was punishing me for not calling him when I first came into town, but it seems that he was just busy with houseguests.

So I went and visited him at the Valley office of The Company That Must Not Be Named, and laughed my ass off when I saw their space, because it so reminds me of the NY office before we moved to the West Side. "Look familiar?"John said to me when he saw my face. It's so small and ratty and wormed into a corner and all bits and pieces and ugly carpets. And I'll bet someday they'll move and then realize how much happier they were before, just like we did.

After seeing John, I went out to dinner with Mom and our neighbours Joan and Jim, Teri's parents. Teri was supposed to come too, but she begged off, post holiday blues and getting a divorce and someone she knows dying hitting her all at once.

We went to this French place that serves duck with cherries that my Mom loves, and the three of them had that, but I was all suspicious so I got the lamb chops, not really noticing that they said "Market price" next to them.

Market price? For lamb chops? Well, they surely were delicious, but they turned out to cost $37, about a third again more than the duck. Mom was mighty annoyed!

More thoughts on The Green Mile. You know, thoughts besides those slippery David Morse ones.

Why on earth was Gary Sinese wearing that upper plate? Anyone else notice that? Those giant white choppers ain't his, I'm sure of it--he was lisping and they made his face a different shape.

The thing that I love about Tom Hanks, the thing that makes him so interesting to watch in a role like this, is that he is truly great at watching and listening--you can turn the camera on him any time you like, during anyone else's lines, and he's always actively listening. On my You've Got Mail DVD, Nora Ephron mentions that she couldn't have cast anyone else in his role, because who else can you watch type and read email for two hours!

I practically fainted when I looked on IMDB and saw that Sam Rockwell, who played Wild Bill, also played Francis Flute in Midsummer Night's Dream this year! Sweet little Francis Flute! This guy's got quite a range.

When Coffey saves the woman, I did think it was funny that his magic not only cured her but washed and combed her hair and put lipstick on her! Coffey's Beauty Parlour, Hair Washed and Set--Tumors Removed.

"And then I washed the third dish. Boy, that egg was on really good, I never thought it'd come clean! Thank goodness for Brillo!"
