27 August Ah, it was nice having a day off yesterday. Of course, I spend a great deal of the day mopping and sopping and throwing towels in the dryer so that I could wet them again and blah blah blah, but I was done by 3p, and it was too late to get to work then, so I did some major hanging out. I didn't do my crit, as I meant to, but I did answer about a zillion emails, including all of my birthday messages (I think!) so that was work well done. And I went to sleep at 10.30p again! I swan, I'm getting so old...
I should have gone to the movies yesterday, but I couldn't bear the thought of leaving the house, so I stayed home and tried to find something reasonable on TV. Which didn't happen. On Wednesday night, though, I saw Runaway Bride. Capsule review, blech. And I wanted to like it, I really did! I walked in knowing that the reviews were all lousy and my mother hated it, but hey, I loved Waterworld, I'm not a slave to the reviews! Unfortunately, in this case they were on the money. It was a dull, unfunny story with unpleasant, irritating characters doing annoying things. Richard Gere's character was a jerk, and then, halfway through the movie, we were supposed to love him, apparently because Garry Marshall wanted us to, not for any logical reason. And Julia Roberts' character was weak. I was just wishing for death for most of the running time. I am, like Jette, a big fan of romantic comedies, though I am a much bigger fan of modern romantic comedies than she is. The thing with romantic comedy is that it's a very delicate medium. It's much harder to make a good romantic comedy than it is to make a good ordinary comedy or a good drama. You have to root for the leads to get together, you have to fear that they won't get together even though they (almost) always do. You really have to care. It all starts with the script--if you haven't got a great script you got nothing, but a ham-handed director could ruin it. Or you have a great director with a lovely light touch and your leads have no chemistry. Or you have actors who strike sparks every time they're onscreen together and the script is weak. It's only the smallest things that make a difference between Moonstruck and Only You, between Notting Hill and My Best Friend's Wedding, between When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle, between Crossing Delancy and, well, Runaway Bride. I wonder if Mickey Blue Eyes will be better, or if I'll be better served by staying home and watching Four Weddings and a Funeral again, instead.
I'm basically never home at 7p, so it's been rather a while since I've seen Jeopardy. Last night, however, I was home for it and all I can say is what the fuck is up with the set? It looks like it was attacked and decorated by deranged, mescaline-addicted Dickens fans.
