So yesterday was our last rehearsal. Dreadful stuff.

Mostly because after Sunday they got a taste of what it's like to have even the smallest bit of an audience (two people) and without the laughs it just died.

Lord knows I can't laugh anymore.

A selection of my notes:

"I know that I told you to be more deliberate in the opening scene, but you were more deliberate until halfway through the second act!"

"When you can't remember your lines, you sigh. Stop it."

"I appreciate you picking up your cues in that scene, but don't be overzealous. Try not to talk over her lines!"

"You're getting too good at that bit. Get worse."

Try not to say "your brother Johnny" instead of "your brother Ernest". I don't care what mistakes you make, don't make them with Ernest, it being the title of the play and all."

"Try not to look quite so bored during that long bit in the second act when you don't talk for pages and pages."

"Don't pause so damn long. She said "Are you going for a nice ride?" and centuries went by until you said "He's sending me away"! A convoy drove through that pause."

"Please don't say "For Christ's sake"! I'm begging you"

"I will never cut that line. I'm leaving it in to punish you."

"A little more virginity, please, Wende!"

And tonight we open! And I no longer have to pay the slightest bit of attention to the show except for in terms of my light cues, because when the show opens the director's job is over.

I can read throughout the entire second act!

Love that "Gonna Dress You Up In My Love-Everybody in Vests" commercial for The Gap. Except for the vests.
