6 August Great rehearsal again last night. We did the same act that we did so very very badly on Wednesday, and with only minimal interference on my part, but lines were learned and a scene that was dead in the water had some life to it (I said to them "You removed the stake from the heart of that scene!") and I was much happier. I may survive this show. Of course, if it's gonna be every other rehearsal being great and every other other rehearsal being lousy, then tonight will be a disaster, we're off Saturday, Sunday should go well, Monday should drive us to the brink of suicide, and Tuesday we open and it will go well! After that, it's neither my business nor my problem anymore, as once the show opens the director's job is over.
I did Very Bad Things yesterday in Amazon and it's all Columbine's fault. Well, Columbine's and Nina's. This entry reminded me how much I loved these books when I was a kid (including the ones that Columbine says no-one has heard of), so I ordered all but the out of print one. And back in October, Nina recommended Watermelon by Marian Keyes to me, because it was in a similar vein to Bridget Jones' Diary. I finally got 'round to reading it a couple of weeks ago, and fell madly in love. I do highly recommend it, it's an absolutely wonderful and hilarious book about a woman whose husband leaves her for another woman within minutes of her giving birth to their first child, so she goes home to her parents. I know, it doesn't sound incredibly funny, but it is. Anyway, I decided to pop over to Amazon.uk and see if she had more books, and then I thought I'd check what Discworld novels have appeared since I last got any, and basically, between Amazons US and UK, I bankrupted myself. Well, my birthday is coming up, after all...
Guess what? Whining works! When I got home last night and checked my e-mail, I hadn't heard from documentary guy (though I did get a jeering letter from Renee saying that she had gotten an e-mail, too, even though she lives in some Carolina or another--you all think that she's so nice and that she'd never kick a person when she's down, HA I say!) and I was very sad! I decided to check my phone messages, just kind of to see who called (duh) not because I thought that he might have called, but he had! And he was laughing and said that I sounded very entertaining and stuff (either he was being polite or he thought that I was joking when I threatened to hold my breath until my face turned blue) and that it sounded like I would be great. Now I just gotta worry about how awful I'll look...You didn't think that I was gonna stop complaining, did you? My God, you don't know me at all!!
Last night I saw a clip from Mystery Men (can't wait to see that!) with Greg Kinnear complaining to his publicist in a limo, and the publicist said "I'm a publicist, not a magician!" But he is! The role of the publicist is played by magician turned actor Ricky Jay! I felt so ultimate cool getting that joke.
