(The Mighty Kymm--you'll not see nothing like!)

4 April

Happy Easter! Welcome back, Jesus! Maybe now we can stop discussing Peeps exclusively on two mailing lists that I am on!

So yesterday I spent the whole day figuring out what songs I'm putting on my new mix tape for the Randy Loop!

Yeah, I know, hold me back, my wild-ass life is getting out of control. Living on the edge, that's me.

You may think that, having made five mix tapes just recently, that I could just pick one of those to use in the Loop, but no, none of them will do. And besides, I want to use some of the neat songs that I have gotten from my current tape trade, like "Juliet Pauses" by Paul Bellows, "Beware of the Beautiful Stranger" by Pete Atkin and "Camel Walk" by Southern Culture on the Skids.

And especially "Lady With the Braid" by Dory Previn, since that song is so completely about me that I can hardly stand it.

And then last night I went to see David Wilcox at the Bottom Line.

Back when Michael was in town and he came to see my show, he gave me a David Wilcox cd, as he was certain that I would love him, and he was entirely right.

I later realized, after getting others of his albums, that Michael gave me the exact right one to start with, the live album East Asheville Hardware, as live is where David really shines, and I might not have become a fan had I started with another album.

Last night being my first opportunity to see him shine live, I grabbed it with both hands!

When I got there, I saw that there was an opening act, which made me roll my eyes a bit, as who the hell wants to see opening acts, but this was a guitar duo called The Kennedys, and they were really good!

They looked like they were straight out of the sixties, but several years apart, as Pete was in a hippie shirt with hippie hair and sideburns, and Maura was in a velvet frock coat with a ruffly shirt, more like a Who-era Mod.

But the interesting thing was that they didn't look as though they were wearing costumes at all, they looked more as if they always dress that way because that is who they are. They just looked completely natural.

Their songs were good--the lyrics were a trifle pedantic for my taste, one song containing the rather bald lyric "So just be yourself", but the music was excellent. Maura has a lovely voice, and they are both top-notch guitar players, Pete especially. Not to knock Maura, but she is just really good, while Pete is one of those guitar savants, making the guitar do things that you didn't know it could do, but not at all in a show-offy way.

I recommend them if they ever play in your area. They're playing at the Mercury Lounge on 1 May. Maybe I'll go see them.

Then was David. And he is really special live.

He has this smile that is all white teeth and sparkling eyes. When this man smiles a smile, that smile stays smiled, let me tell you.

And he is a great storyteller, talking before each song on either the theme of the song, or how he came to write it, and they are much better with the stories than without. I do prefer his more up-tempo, funny songs, but the ballads were good, too. I wish he had done "Johnny's Camero", my fave rave, but 'twas not to be.

All in all, a really swell evening out. Go see David! Go buy his albums! Especially the live one! And go see The Kennedys at a club near you! I'll even be helpful and provide their tour info. Here's David Wilcox's and here's The Kennedys'.

I'm babysitting tonight so that Cynthia and Fran can have a date (I said, but you went out together last Saturday, didn't that count? Apparently not.).

I sure hope that the horoscope (below) doesn't mean what I think it means!

Today's horoscope:
It appears that young family members delight in thwarting you, but they are only testing their will. Turn contests into cooperation.

One year ago today:
If that man ever apologizes for something that he himself has done, it'll be time to start checking for pods.
