So here's the story about Kirsten.
On Sunday night she was crossing the street at the corner of 9th and 42nd, and a bus took a left turn and ran her down.
She is the fourth person that I know who has been hit by a bus at that corner, because it's the first left after the Port Authority, and there is a green arrow, and the busses speed through even after the arrow is gone, just as though people are not crossing within the crosswalk and with the light.
The bus ran over her foot rather than her torso or her head, so as far as being run down by a bus goes, it was one of the better ones, but they took her to the hospital and sewed up her foot and she's having an operation on Thursday and if it's not healing properly they might have to do skin grafts.
Needless to say, she will no longer be directing our show.
I said to her on the phone:
"My God, Kirsten, if you didn't want to direct the show you could have just quit! You didn't have to throw yourself under a bus!"
I took the opportunity of having a friend in the hospital to go to Coliseum and buy books!
And no, I didn't buy any for myself! Shame on you for thinking such a thing. I love buying books no matter who they are for!
I walked into the store and the first thing I saw was Julia Sweeney's God Said Ha!, which I thought was appropriate for a person who had just been run over by a bus. Then I saw a copy of Time and Again, and I thought that she probably hadn't read it and I was so thrilled at the idea of introducing her to such a wonderful book (have you read it yet? Remember, don't peek at the end!) that I got that for her, too.
I visited her after work, ran into Sharon on her way out and Jackie turned up while I was there, and she got calls from Karen Wells and Ronnie. I told her that she should have a company list handy so that she can check off names of those who call and visit and punish those that don't!
Came home and added half of last November to hedgehog.net. Only 15 1/2 months left!
Man, this is taking forever!
One year ago today:
Alright, now I know I'm back in NY.
