Yesterday was a weird trip to the office.
It's an 18 block walk, and in a five minute period I ran into three people I know, two of which I have not seen in years!
First I saw David, but I see him plenty, so I just said "I'm running late for work!" and turned, then immediately saw this blond guy with a limp whom I had directed in a show two years ago and lent him my pyjamas for a costume and never got them back!
He had moved right after the show and I didn't have a number for him, you see. The thing is, hang around 9th Ave. in the 40's for long enough and you'll run into every actor in NY, so I always figured that I'd run into him again.
I couldn't remember his name, of course, so I said "Honey, I've forgotten your name" and he said "It's Rob" and he turned to his friend and said "This is Kymm Zuckert with a Y and two M's!"
I said "I guess you've shown me up!"
After getting Rob's phone number in order to get my damn pyjamas back, I kept walking, and in a couple of blocks I passed the maintenance man from the theatre that my company used to be in, the Nat Horne. I haven't seen him in ages either, but since I had already run into David and Rob, it just seemed natural to see him and we just waved and grinned at each other without stopping..
Then, after old home week, I passed a giant union demonstration.
There is a non-union construction project going up on 9th and there are always pickets in front of it, along with a ten foot tall inflatable rat with the name of the contractor hanging around its neck (all true!) but yesterday there were like a thousand guys in the street marching! There were also a bunch of cops in riot gear in case of problems just standing around yawning.
It was pretty interesting!
Nik was telling me about when he was a freshman in high school, and how he was so tiny, only 4'10" and 75lbs, and I realized that, since I am four years older than he is, when he was 14 and looking 8, I was 18, a freshman at NYU, 5'9 1/2", looking pretty much like I do now but thinner,and I was going through my punk period!
I told him "I could have babysat you!" and he said "I would have found you to be astounding!"
One year ago today:
