26 February So yesterday was Ash Wednesday! I went to church in the late afternoon directly after the system crashed, so it was a perfect opportunity to leave for an hour. St. Paul the Apostle is only a few blocks away from the new office. It is a very strange church, in that it is a giant cathedral with a tiny church inside of it. The altar is miles and miles away at the far end of the church, but there is a little stage built about 100 yards from it that is right up close to the pews and that's where everything takes place, but it's so funny--like camping out in the middle of the church. The priest was about the most Jewish looking priest that I've ever seen. I named him Father Rosenbaum. He said in his homily "What are the ashes for? It's not simply so that you can see who's Catholic and who's not; though that can be awfully interesting!" and he was right. Spying all of the ashes round my office was pretty neat. I kept thinking "Gee, I didn't know she was Catholic!" Another funny thing was that I went back to the office afterwards and everyone had split but for the systems guys, who are all Russian, and each one of them asked me "What's that on your head?" and I couldn't figure out why none of them knew. And then I realized that being Russian they came from an officially atheist country, so of course they wouldn't know about Ash Wednesday! At first I tried to explain it, but when the fourth one asked me, I just said "It's a Catholic thing."
I went into Linus' office yesterday to get some quick info, and he had to call someone to get it and when the phone was ringing he said to me "O, I've been meaning to talk to you. It has come to my attention, and it's not a big deal because I know that Diane..." and then the person picked up and I got my info and left, as I had someone waiting on the phone for it. And I avoided Linus for the rest of the day. Because I'm almost certain that he's gonna tell me to come in at 9a and I'm putting that off for as long as I can...
So the other night I got a call from this woman directing a play offering me a role in a show going up a week after the show I'm directing, and I really wasn't that interested, so I waited until the next day to answer the call, but I thought that Le would never have cast me in a one act if it wasn't a good role and if it wasn't possible to do at the same time as the show I'm directing. So I called at last and accepted the role, but the woman said that someone else had accepted before me! That Le had given her four names as replacements for an actress that she lost, and she decided to ring everyone all at once and I was not the first to return the call. Of course, I'm relieved that I don't have to do this, as I do not have the time, but that way of casting is just not done.
Got an e-mail the other day saying "All this time, I thought that Cynthia and Fran were lesbians!" It's funny, but that never occurred to me, because I've only known two people named Fran in my life and both were men, so I forget that most people (who are neither Irish nor Italian) don't automatically think that a person named Fran would be a guy!
