(The Mighty Kymm--you'll not see nothing like!)

20 December

Strangely enough, I got up at 7.50a yesterday morning.

Of course, my body clock is still on NY time, and I had gone to bed at 11p the night before, but it was odd to wake, naturally, before 8a, realize that I wasn't going back to sleep, get up, dress, go out to breakfast at the House of Pancakes with Mom (who was up as well), and be home by 11a!

I mean, on a day I don't have to work. Of course, I don't get up that early on days that I do have to work, but you know what I mean.

Then we went to see A Civil Action at the Academy.

Now, I have been predicting disaster with this film for simply ages, having nothing to do with the film itself or anything I had heard, but because of the billboard.

You see, on the Disney store in Times Square there is a billboard facing Broadway and one facing 42nd St., and any film with a billboard facing Broadway has always been not only a flop, but a spectacular flop, like Holy Man and Krippendorf's Tribe, and that's where the billboard for A Civil Action is.

That said, I did like it, though it certainly could still spectacularly flop.

I didn't like Travolta much, working, as he was, primarily in the making faces style of acting, but Robert Duvall and Bill Macy and Kathleen Quinlan were extremely good, and the story was interesting.

I always enjoy the theme of a man gaining his soul.

Then, afterwards, I visited Melanie and her kids. Melanie is one of my oldest friends--we met when I was nine and she was eight and we were in a carpool together.

When I got to the door, her daughters Katherine and Rebeccah launched themselves at me with glee, shouting "Hooray! Hooray! Kymm is here!" which is always gratifying. When I got inside, I saw her son, Donald, at the far end of the living room with his back to me, and I said "Donald doesn't love me anymore! He didn't throw himself into my arms like his sister did!", and then he turned around, his face wreathed in smiles, holding a calculator upside-down, on which he had typed 0.7734, so it read "hELL0".

It was extremely cute.

I flung a bag of presents at Melanie (someday I'll have a passel of kids and all of my friends will have to give them presents! In the meantime, I need more childless friends, Christmas is getting more and more expensive!!) and we all went to Homestyle Buffet.

Homestyle Buffet is an All-You-Can-Eat kind of place, set out in cafeteria style, and I was somewhat suspicious of the whole deal, but the food was actually really good. And the kids were generally pretty presentable and didn't spill anything or run around or yell, which was cool.

At one point, I looked at the three children and said "You are such a bunch of freaks. Freak One, Freak Two, and Freak Three!" And Donald, the middle child, looked at me and said:

"I'm Freak Two!"

It's funny, though--since Melanie reads this page, I actually had almost nothing to say to her! I know other people have had this problem, but this is the first time I have come across it.

I mean, I told a couple of stories that I realized that she had already read, and had either forgotten, didn't read carefully at the time, or was just being polite about listening to me tell them in the exact same words!

If you ever meet me and think I'm being spontaneous about anything at all, keep in mind that I'm not! My stories tend to be as well-rehearsed as a Broadway play.
