18 August So it's raining in New York. Of course, in my office there are no windows or anything, so I only knew from the radio that it was pouring all day. They made an enormous fuss over it, though! If I had believed the radio, I'd have thought that people were drowning in mid-town! By the time I had left, it had stopped, but it was so humid that it was almost impossible to walk down the street. I needed a machete!
So I found out the other day that Great Big Sea is coming to town! Remember when I saw them at the Fleadh and fell madly in love? Well, I got my Pollstar update on them the other day, and it said that they would be at the Bowery Ballroom on 18 September! Now, I have never been to the Bowery Ballroom, so I called information, but it was during the Bell Atlantic strike, so there was no information to be had, and I couldn't find it in the phone book to save my life, but then I finally remembered that you can locally call long distance information, which is AT&T. Just a little tip from me to you in case your local phone company goes on strike! Anyway, I rang the Bowery Ballroom, and there was a recording saying that I had to either call some alterna-Ticketmaster place or go round to the Mercury Lounge between 3p and 3a. Apparently, the Bowery Ballroom exists, but knows nothing whatsoever about itself. Whatever. Anyway, I tried ringing the ticket place, and, after pressing every button on the phone several times, finally managed to get to a real live person, who quickly told me that they had not the smallest smidge of information on this show. So, several days later, I went downtown to the Mercury Lounge to find out about the show. I get there, the girl looks at me as though I have sprouted a second head, and told me to call between 1p and 6p. As opposed to dropping by between 3p and 3a. Like is said on the Bowery Ballroom tape. Whatever! The next day I called, and the girl had no information on the Great Big Sea show. I had to ask casual questions like "Around what time do shows usually start? If you were selling tickets, which I know you are not, can you ascertain a guess as to how much they might cost, maybe?" She grudgingly admitted that the shows generally start at 10pand cost $12. Yesterday, I decided to glance at Pollstar again, and the Great Big Sea show on 18 September at the Bowery Ballroom is no longer listed. Did I imagine the whole thing?
Did you see the Seinfeld comedy show last week? I don't know about you, but he has always worked 100% clean, so every time he said "goddamn" I jumped a mile. It was like hearing my mother say "fuck"!
I only have five more days of being 33! No pressure, no hints. Sniff...
