5 August So, the other day I went out to lunch with John and Liza, and I casually mentioned that I took wedding pictures, and she stopped stock still and said "What's your style?" "Mostly black and white, mostly candid." "Argh! What do you charge?" "$500." "ARGH! We just put down a deposit!" "How much is your photographer charging?" "$1700! And it's a bargain!" So I pumped her for details, and she said one thing that I already know, that my natural style (candid and b/w) is remarkably fashionable right now in wedding pictures, and that she saw photographers that charged as much as $2500. I asked her what she was getting for her $1700, and she said an eight hour shoot, 300 shots (not even ten rolls), around five loose prints, and another 40 bound into a wedding album. I shoot 13-20 rolls and offer 15 loose shots, no album, other shots extra. I could double my prices and not offer a single other thing, and still be remarkably cheap! I showed her some of Amanda and Jeff's pictures that I happened to have with me, and she kept kicking herself that she didn't know to hire me, which was very gratifying. Then she asked me where I advertised, and I said "Um, nowhere." and she told me to advertise in some bridal magazines, for heaven's sake! So, today I picked up "New York Bride" and "New Jersey Bride" ($9! Thank goodness it's deductible!) and I'll look into what ads will cost. The moon, I'm certain, but who knows? Maybe they'll work!
Did ya'll see Maximum Bob last night? It's like a funny version of American Gothic with the Wickie Watchie Mermaids and I fell madly in love with it in about four seconds. My favourite bit was where this guy kidnapped this woman and he's laboriously writing out a ransom note, when he stops and asks:
"How d'yew spell orals?"
Too cool, too funny, too quirky. It'll never last.
As of today, Weehawken has joined the rest of civilization. We now have Comedy Central!! Of course, it hasn't been the same since the demise of Night After Night With Allen Havey and The Higgins Boys and Gruber but I'll take what I can get!
