2 August Heeheehee. Well the cries of "I need sunglasses!" were heard far and wide throughout the land yesterday from those who saw my new re-design! All I have to say to that is, click that year ago today link, darlings, you don't know from bright!
Had a swell day yesterday. Decided on the spur of the moment that I wouldn't be seen dead hanging around the house, so, on Diane's recommendation, I decided to check out Ever After. Well, I flat out loved it. I've always liked Drew Barrymore, but she really came into her own here, and it had a strong Cinderella without having a weak prince, and Anjelica Huston (who was born to play the wicked stepmother) played a real character rather than a caricature, and even though you pretty much know how everything's gonna turn out, it still is suspenseful. That's the deal with great romantic comedy. You know that the two people who belong together will end up together (most of the time--Annie Hall is, after all, a romantic comedy), but if you sit back all along, thinking "Yeah, whatever, conflict, conflict, obviously it'll turn out fine", then that is very wrong and bad. In the best romantic comedies (a very fragile genre) you must fear that they won't end up together, even if you know that they will!
Before the movie I had time to kill, so I went to the most evil and dreadful Virgin Reconds, and bought everything in sight. The first thing in sight was the seven cd set "Have a Nice Day-The 70's Pop Culture Set", which was $25 off, so I snapped it up, along with "Old Friends", the Simon and Garfunkel box set, "An Evening Wasted With Tom Lehrer", Barenaked Ladies' "Stunt", Dan Bern's first album, and, best and most gloriously of all, "Shoes For Industry", which is Firesign Theatre's greatest hits. Admittedly, I would far and away prefer the full albums, but since I have never seen any Firesign on cd, I was thrilled as Canby (and you know how thrilled he can be!) to see it.
After all that, I went home to babysit so that Cynthia and Fran could go see the boxing at the Goodwill Games, which didn't start until 10.30p, so Molly and Bonnie were already asleep, though, in Bonnie's case, not for long. I watched Foul Play, another truly great romantic comedy, and one that I certainly must have seen more often than I realized, because I could recite long sections in chorus with Chevy and Goldie even though I probably haven't seen it in ten years! Then, Bonnie woke up. I have decided that this is a very bad and evil baby put on earth just to torment me, because she simply would not be put down! If I picked her up she would fall asleep immediately, but not matter how carefully I put her back down, she would start screaming like the demon spawn that she is. So, after about an hour of this, I just held her (fortunately, she was sleeping deeply enough to allow me to sit down) for half an hour, until I was sure that she was in a deep enough sleep not to wake if I put her down. I swear, it was like handling nitroglycerine!
