19 September Saw the great and glorious Glenn Tilbrook at the Mercury Lounge again last night! And I nearly skipped it, too, because at 3p I practically fell asleep at my desk, I was so exhausted, plus I was afraid that the show wouldn't be as good and it would dissipate the experience of Wednesday night. But I had my camera, so I decided to go. And I'm glad of it! It was completely swell again, though this time he was much tougher on the people launching themselves at the stage like lemmings. He kept shouting out "Alright, new rule! No unison singing!" and things like that, and was occasionally reduced to stomping on people's fingers as they tried to claw their way onto the stage and shrieking "NONONONONO! I want to sing this one by myself!!", but the Norse God was there again, and he got up to harmonize on a Beatles song (completely left my head which one) and everyone started shouting "Cool For Cats! Sing Cool For Cats!" and Glenn made him do so. It wasn't as transcendant as Wednesday, but it was great.
The one annoying thing was that I was standing practically right next to this really really annoying drunk woman who was acting as though she was at Madison Square Garden about fifty yards away from the stage, rather than four inches from Glenn and she was screaming at the exact wrong frequency pretty constantly. I was standing with Dave Jay from work and some of his friends, and one of them nicknamed her Mary Jo Buttofucco (is that spelled right? Doesn't look like it.), but I just called her That Horrible Horrible Drunk Woman. I kept turning to Dave Jay and telling him that I really wanted to just flick her in the forehead. Flickflickflick.
I realized that I never mentioned the opening act yesterday. His name is Nick Hudson, and he was just wonderful. A soaring tenor voice and the best guitar player that I was ever seen. All kinds of open tunings and a habit of doing these lightning re-tunings in the middle of songs to make the notes swoop. Fabulous.
I stood in the best spot again (front and centre) and took eight rolls of Glenn and Nick and afterwards I was buying Nick's cd and I signed up for the Squeeze fan club and Nick's mailing list and I heard the woman in charge say that she was Squeeze's manager, so I mentioned that I had taken all those pics and that I'd be happy to send her some, so she told me to make a note next to my name on the fan club list and they'd write to me. I hope they turn out well...in eight rolls there should be a couple of good ones.
