15 October What a hideous night.
The show. The show the show the show.
Let's just put it this way: The show will open tomorrow night without having done a complete runthrough. We ran acts one and two, which took nearly four hours. There is, however, a third act that I have yet to see. The lights were not actually plugged into the dimmers, so I must run it cold opening night. At one point, an actor asked a producer the meaning of a line. Pesonally, I think that if you don't know the meaning on the night before opening, you don't need to know. The stage manager and I sat in the booth making fun of everyone but my friend Peter, the guy playing Renfield, and an actor playing eight different roles beautifully. They staged the climactic fight scene at 1a. And the accents are appalling.
Also, I had cramps.
One good thing, though. I went down to the corner store to get something to eat, and I noticed a rack of candy. I was glancing at it casually thinking "I didn't know they were selling Smarties in the States! And Aero bars! Great heavens, Toffee Crisps!" and then, I spied the creme de la creme, Crunchie bars! They are almost impossible to find in the U.S., but now I know that I can always find British candy on the corner of 2nd Ave. and 4th St.
Another good thing yesterday was that the bottle machine at the Food Emporium was neither full nor broken for once, so I returned 118 of the Pepsi bottles that I had scattered around my desk. That wasn't all of them, but it's a start!
