15 November Snow! On Thursday night the news kept showing pictures of plows at the ready and piles of shovels and rock salt at Home Depot and they kept saying "The commute tomorrow will be bad, be certain to leave a little early!" Woke up yesterday morning to clear sidewalks and clear skies. Finally last night, though, it did snow. Kind of half-rain, and it certainly didn't stick or anything, and I know this doesn't sound like anything to anyone from say, o I don't know, Michigan, but it was the first snow of the season and therefor momentous...in a depressing kind of way.
So how was my opening, you ask? I don't know, I didn't go. You see, I e-mailed Nick, the gallery guy, that they weren't matted and was that okay, and he said that he would check them when he got there, and that if they looked shaggy he would put them off in a corner or something. I took my lunch hour to go downtown and drop them off, and I walked into this beautiful gallery with blonde wood everywhere and gorgeous art and I felt like such an Okie! "'Scuse me, Ah done brought mah photygraphs fer yah ma'am, thanky kahndly. Do yawl have a pump where Ah kin water mah mule?" I practically tugged on my forelock. Nick wasn't there yet and neither was O'Delle, whom I was supposed to leave them with, so I left them with this lady and went back to the office. Nick never called me to say yes they're fine or no they're shit so I just decided to go home instead as it would have been just too humiliating to show up and be told to take my un-matted pictures and leave.
So instead I went to see my friend Dave Jay and his band play at a coffee shop downtown. When I got there, it was just Dave playing solo in this tiny tiny storefront with a few people sitting around the edges. It was pretty cool, but then people started to leave (not because they were hating it, just because it was time to leave) until I was the only audience member left. The pressure was enormous! Of course, at that point, the rest of the band arrived and were most perturbed at the fact that there was an audience of one (i.e. me) and the bass player started fighting with the store manager. Boy, did I ever want to leave. Then they started to play, and they were alright, but the three of them all seemed to be playing by themselves--no connection, you know? Not to mention the fact that it was all of the same songs that Dave had just played. Anyway, the second wave of audience arrived after a bit, so I was free to go.
Found another really great page, Ventures. This guy is a fantastic storyteller. Don't be put off by the fact that he's a motivational speaker, he'll really cool!
