(The Mighty Kymm--you'll not see nothing like!)

8 November

It's raining and raining.

The rain woke me in time to slosh over to McDonald's and get my breakfast, but when I got home I found that rather than a sausage biscuit I had accidentally gotten a biscuit biscuit--not a sausage in sight. So I went back (slosh slosh slosh) but breakfast was over and there were no sausages left, so I said fine, I was perfectly happy to eat the biscuit, but I wanted part of my money back.

They refunded for the entire sausage biscuit, so I got the plain biscuit for free, and then on my way out, Jose slipped me a cheeseburger and an apple pie, which I thought was very sweet.

Last night I decided to start making the prints for the show.

If you recall, I mentioned the other day that these were the pictures that I was considering, though I wasn't certain about the picture of Sam and the candle. Well, the Sam Street fans came out of the closet, I'll tell ya, and I got several e-mails voting strongly for its inclusion, so I decided that I would. Include it, that is.

Also, I got a title for it. I had always called it "Sam With a Candle on His Head" which is a little Dances With Wolves but okay, and then Sandra called it "Birthday Head", which is much better!

Anyway, making prints for a gallery was much different than making prints for myself or for friends. I usually work like the wind--just barreling through, trying to do as much as possible as well as possible in as short a time as possible, which means that sometimes you discover mistakes and hairs and dust after the fact.

So this time I had to force myself to work s l o w l y, and I did five copies of one print in two hours, which is about half speed, but they look really nice and clean and pretty.

Of course, there is no darkroom time available this weekend, so I won't be able to make the other three prints until Monday.

Couple more Boogie Nights observations:

I thought it was hilarious that in the film there was a porn actor named Johnny Doe, but also the actor/musician John Doe (from X) was in it, playing Julianne Moore's ex-husband. Was that on purpose, or a co-incidence?

Also, I spent half of the film wondering who that actor playing the camera-man was. He looked wildly familiar, but I couldn't figure it out. Well, it turned out that it was Ricky Jay, the magician! So that made me wonder whether he was also the magic consultant, as one of the characters was also a magician. I'll bet he was. And I'll bet he had fun with those cheesy tricks.

The last thing I noticed was that after this marvelous stylish film, the closing titles looked like shit! They were really badly laid out and in a terrible font and they scrolled forever and the music underneath was dreadful...and then it hit me!
They were seventies porn-style titles!

Very subtle.

Fine in your own living room, not so great in Carnegie Hall.
