29 March Now, I know that I've completely behind the times on this, but when I was at John's last night, feeding Rappy, and I was glancing at the videos on his shelf, and decided to watch Babe for the first time. What a charming film! I just loved those mice, and the farmer, and his wife, about whom there was no buzz at all, but she was terrific, and I was cheering at the end, which Rappy found somewhat alarming. And I thought I'd never eat bacon again until I had that sausage biscuit at McDonalds this morning....
Got this great e-mail the other day: "I was talking to my girlfriend about you and she said although you often say how boring your life is , you probably don't realize that to really boring people it is interesting . Some people don't ever get off their asses and do anything , so your life ( or even mine , for that matter ) although boring to you because its 'normal' is actually pretty cool." And, of course, I somewhat cringed when I got this, because I have so recently written my diatribe about diarists saying that they're boring! I guess I say it more often than I think...
And, a final word on the subject of those of us who write about our little lives, from this month's Vanity Fair. And, let me add that I am including this more as my opinion as a reader, not because I think I'm all that. "Memoir writing is not necessarily about what has happened in the writer's life. What it does require is that the writer be gifted with an unflinching eyes, the ability to look squarely at one's life and convey whatever he or she finds to the page. The best are funny, insightful, and very moving, and if you have that kind of talent, nothing much at all need have happened to you to write a beautiful and memorable book."
There was a girl painting her nails on the subway this morning.
