22 March
Well, last night was movie night for Kymm!
I went to see Smilla's Sense of Snow, which I liked alot, but I think that it makes alot more sense if you've read the book. I've never particularly cared for Julia Ormond, as she was hideous in the equally hideous Legends of the Fall, but I quite liked her in this film. And Gabriel Byrne is such a godlike creature that I'll see him in anything, but the main reason that I enjoyed the movie so much is because I AM Smilla, you see. I sort of recognized this fact when I was reading the book, but it really hit me watching the film. She's prickly and hard and holds people away from her, and that's me, that's really me. Of course unlike Smilla, I also work the funny, and I'm not nearly her equal in the looks department, and obviously I'm not an Inuit or anything, but she is me. She's a hedgehog girl like me.
Overheard in the queue for the Ladies Room after seeing Smilla:
Girl #1: "I don't get it! When she found the suction cups, what on earth made her go down to the basement and find the tape?"
And then, I felt like more, so I went to see Secrets and Lies, which was also very good. Loved Brenda Blethyn, loved Mariane Jean-Baptiste, but Tim Spall was the standout in that show, and I don't know why no-one else has said so.
I read that Hammer is wearing body armour and traveling with a bodyguard because he things that the same people who killed Tupac will try to kill him, too, 'cause he's on the same label. I call that an over-inflated sense of self-worth.
