29 June So yesterday was a beautiful day again, hot but not humid, but I got to spend a little time out in it this time. I was sitting in front of the tube and I saw an ad for Hercules and I thought I'd wander into town and watch it. Of course I got to the theatre late, but Face/Off was just about to start so I thought I'd see that instead. Good call! I'm not much of an action fan, 'cause I like plot and character development and things, and I find that running and jumping and chasing and shooting and hitting get real old real fast, but this film is terrific! Best action film since Speed. I doubt this is news to anyone but me, but that John Woo sure as shit can choreograph a fight sequence! And the acting was glorious. It's so much fun to see that Victor/Victoria thing of Cage playing Travolta imitating Cage. They both are really terrific. Travolta has the flashier role for most of the picture, what with playing Cage and all, but Cage is the stronger actor so it kind of evens out. It's really interesting to see Travolta, the charisma-machine, play a completely uncharismatic version of himself, and then turn it on like a light when he becomes Cage. Quibbles are minor. I think it's fairly hilarious that they say to Cage that the voice microchip is very delicately balanced and can even be dislodged by a sharp sneeze, and then he immediately proceeds to get beat up about seventeen times in a row without it moving a millimeter. Also, if you're going to use stuntmen for a slo-mo sequence you should make certain that their faces are covered. 'Cause you have an awful lot of time to look at them and say "Those aren't the stars!"
And I must say that when Cage says the line that I used as the title of this entry, it is one of the most intensely erotic moments in film history.
The most hilarious PSA was on before the movie. Maybe it's been playing for ages, but this was a Loews theatre and I always go to Cineplex Odeon and have never seen it before. It was a Sesame Street PSA and all of the Muppets are sitting in a movie theatre singing "Don't forget to watch the movie/Don't forget to watch the show!" not to mention "Don't surf/There is no water!" All these adults were watching this, howling with laughter at Elmo and The Count and everybody. It got applause.
And in closing I just want to make clear that Melody does NOT live up my ass!
