(The Mighty Kymm--you'll not see nothing like!)

1 June

I have returned!!

Thrilled to be back with them bad kitties and the 393 pieces of e-mail I had waiting for me (no, I'm not really that popular, one whole hell of a large percentage was from the Diary-L mailing list), but I was sorry to leave. Had a swell time, went to the theatre, the movies, museums, and bought enough books that Greg and Elaine had to actually give me one of their suitcases (perhaps a clue that one has done a trifle too much shopping).

So let's just do a quick rundown of stuff I saw.

Theatre:

Popcorn: In the West End by Ben Elton. Very good, though the ending is a trifle condescending and the American accents were hideously bad, but for two actors. Who happened to be American.

Master Class: In the West End starring Patti Lupone. A great tour de force with the rudest, stupidest audience. If you do not know how to conduct yourself in the theatre you should stay home and watch videos where you clearly belong.

Lady in the Dark (twice): At the National. What a strange show! The American accents were much better than in Popcorn. I like it alot, but the reason I saw it twice was because I have an enormous crush on one of the actors, Adrian Dunbar, who is tremendously engaging. Not to mention way cute. I could not take my eyes off him, even when he was standing in the corner not even remotely the centre of attention.

Art: In the West End. A show about a man who buys a white painting with white lines on it and the havoc that this decision wrecks upon his circle of friends. Very good.

Caucasian Chalk Circle: At the National in the round starring Juliet Stephenson. A new translation, so it was missing the quote that I put on the bio page (find it if you can--you have to really want to). I've never seen Juliet Stephenson onstage before, and she was excellent. A very clever production.

Hamlet: At the RSC in Stratford starring Alex Jennings and Edward Petherbridge. AKA Hamlet's Greatest Hits. It was very cut and re-arranged in an order I have never seen before (I was surprised not to see Hamlet and Laertes kill each other at the top of Act II) but it really worked well, after the initial shock wore off. Alex Jennings was brilliant. He is one of the best actors I have ever had the joy to watch onstage. Incredibly cute, too. Christ, I need hosing down...

Much Ado About Nothing: At the RSC in Stratford starring Alex Jennings. Mr. Jennings must have the stamina of a triathelete to do Hamlet one night and Benedick the very next matinee. A terrific production but for the last five minutes which was the worst ending of any show I have ever seen.

Henry VIII: At the RSC in Stratford starring Jane Lapotaire. This was a show that I was completely unfamiliar with--never saw, never read, so it was awfully interesting to see. The actor who played Henry also played the First Gravedigger in Hamlet the night before.

Movies:

Ferris Bueller's Day Off: On the plane. I don't remember being all that crazy about it when it was first released, but I really liked it this time. Especially Cameron. Funny how now, ten years later, Matthew Broderick looks about one year older and Alan Ruck looks about twenty years older.

Trees Lounge: Excellent. Very sad and spare.

Microcosmos: It really gives you the feeling about how difficult it is to be a bug.

The People vs Larry Flynt: Such a very American film, it's most interesting to see in another country.

The English Patient: Terrific. Though it is a sin to cover such a beautiful face with all that burn makeup.

Scream: Great fun. Even though one of the actors overacts to the point that he should have been killed earlier in the film so as to spare us all.

Fierce Creatures: On the plane. Not anything like as good as Wanda, but very funny.

Jerry McGuire: On the plane. Just swell. It's easy to denigrate Tom Cruise, what with him being so popular and pretty and all, but he really did an awfully good job.

Neat stuff I had waiting for me when I got back:

1. Remember when I sent those pictures to Billy Bragg? Well, he sent me back a thank you note and a CD! What a sweet guy...

2. Got an e-mail letting me know that this site is in the Village Voice this week! Yes, in the Best of the Web section, isn't that cool? I don't expect my hits to go up too much, as the URL is wrong, but I don't mind.

3. I made People Chase! Yay!!! It's a tough ring to get in, and I am thrilled spitless.

4. Remember the e-zine I had decided to write for? Well, the first issue with me in it is available. Go look!
