2 January

The first day of '97 was a pain, which is a crappy way to start the year.

I was kind of cold, and I decided to take a bath to warm up, and when nothing but ice water came from the pipes, I finally realized that the furnace was off, which was why I was cold in the first place. And there was no-one in the office downstairs, so it couldn't get fixed until today (one hopes-I haven't been home to find out yet), so I just had to freeze all day. It was SO COLD that I actually closed all of the windows! I NEVER close all of the windows, especially in the kitchen where the catbox is, but I just couldn't take it. Finally, at night, I couldn't take it anymore, so I turned on the oven (I know, I know, very dangerous) so at least the kitchen would be warm. The worst bit was that I absolutely HAD to wash my hair, as I couldn't possibly go to work today with it so filthy, so I girded up my loins and stuck my head under the faucet in the sink.

The screams could be heard for blocks...

Got me NEW GLASSES for Xmas (same frames, new prescription), and it's so fabulous, seeing crystal clearly. I can look down the street and read signs that are blocks and blocks away without squinting! I swear, it's a great a revelation as when I was twelve and got glasses for the first time, and was amazed that I could see the individual leaves on trees from quite a long way away.

It never occurred to me that that was possible.

Also, I got prescription sunglasses as well, which is such a thrill, you have no idea. I love sunglasses, and I have about a jillion pairs, but I can never wear them, because I cannot see a thing. So, when I was getting my new glasses, I begged prettily, and got this great pair of thin tortoiseshell frames, and it's just so neat I can't even begin to tell you.

Well, them bad kitties are so thrilled to have me back that they follow me en masse from room to room and leap energetically up and down on my body all night long, which makes sleeping a challenge, but I missed them, too, so I don't mind.
