18 December So my driver's license expired last year, and though I drove last Christmas with it expired (I thought I could pull the old "Goodness me, officer, I had no idea" and blah blah blah) I figure I would be pushing my luck if I did it again, and besides I mislaid it in the move. So I'm getting my driver's license renewed, and the DMV in Manhattan is open until 7p on Thursday, so I decided to go today after work (because I simply must leave things until the last damn minute). Fortunately, I remembered yesterday that I have to go to the dentist at 4.30 today or else I would have had a lopsided sneer in my DL for the next four years. Of course, I still might end up with a lopsided sneer, but it won't be due to the Novocaine.
I'm only just realizing exactly how little I pay attention to the people that I work with. I vaguely knew that Natty was going on vacation, and then she wasn't there for a week, so I kinda had it in the back of my head that she was on holiday, but then two weeks after she got back John turns to me and says "Would you like a chocolate? Natty brought them to me from Paris". I had no idea that she had gone to France! And everyone else knew, because they were apparently discussing it at great length before she left. And I never heard a word! Am I really that unobservant? Do I really care that little about the lives of my office-mates? I mean, there are certainly those that I like and those that like me (and those two lists are not always the same), but it's like I am of them but apart, and they definitely treat me that way because I insist on it. Do I wish that I were friendlier and less stand-offish? Well, kind of--maybe life would be easier that way. Usually, however, I am pretty content with my attitude towards life the way it is.
Don't forget, I'm going home for Xmas on Saturday! So if anyone wants to go on my one time only notify list to let you know when I've come back and posted a new entry, just let me know! And if you were on my last one time only notify list, let me know again, 'cause I'm starting from scratch.
Today is my father's 82nd birthday. Last year on this day he went into the hospital for the last time. Happy birthday Daddy, I miss you.
