28 August So I spent yesterday at the front desk answering phones all day, which meant that I couldn't do any of my real work, even though the phones didn't ring all that often. Which meant that I got to spend the entire day working on this bloody page. Alt tags and navigation extras galore! Of course, the other thing about working the phones meant getting there at 8.30a, but for some ungodly reason that I can't quite remember (though it made perfect sense at the time) I went to bed at the same time I usually do, which meant that I only got four and a half hours of sleep. I am told that I looked like a sleepy poppy all day.
And then, after ten hours of joy sitting in the most uncomfortable chair on earth (I don't know how Kelly stands it!) then I went to Love Creek to run the box office. It was a real blast from the past, because I ran that box for five years. It was funny how I just slid back into the groove, you know? One thing that I had forgotten came back to me in a snap--scrounging for change. "That'll be $15, exact change appreciated if you have it. Have you got a five? Have you got a ten? Oooh, singles, thanks!" I swear, I practically roll on my back and show my belly like Baldrick when he wants to be particularly endearing. And no matter how much change I end up getting, I won't give any out unless they can prove that that twenty is all they've got. I am shameless about peeking into people's wallets.
So Kelly made me a batch of chocolate chip cookies for my birthday and left them on my chair Tuesday morning. I immediately shoved them under my desk, because Kelly's cookies are great and I did not want to share! Hours later, John (whom I would have shared them with anyway) said in a loud clear voice "So, how were those cookies you got from Kelly?" and then everyone started popping up like prairie dogs and I had to pass them around with gritted teeth. And that wasn't the worst of it! The jungle drums started beating, and people kept coming in from other offices (not all of them people that I actually like) sniffing the air and scrounging cookies. I wanted to smack John. I mean, normally I'd share a little easier, but these were awfully good cookies, and I had to give away about half of them.
Mom has been telling me about this big bird who has been nesting in this hanging plant on our front porch, but it was too high up for her to look into it to see if there were any eggs, and it's over a patch of floor that's kind of rotted, so she couldn't climb up on a chair or anything and peer into the pot for fear of falling through the porch, so she just kept watering the plant because she didn't want it to die. Finally I suggested that since the plant was hanging right by a window, she should lean out from inside the house and check that way. So she did, and it had two big baby birds in it! Two big baby birds that she had apparently been watering for weeks!
